Writer, director, producer Dani Menkin's documentary "On the Map" recounts how the 1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team, comprised of both American and Israeli athletes and thought to have no chance of winning, defeated the four-time defending European champion Soviet Red Army team. The game took on political significance as Israel and the Soviet Union did not have diplomatic relations. When Maccabi Tel Aviv won, it boosted Israeli national pride and affirmed Israel's place "on the map." The film combines sports action and historical context to tell the unlikely story of an Israeli triumph over Soviet opponents at the height of the Cold War.
