2. Contrast of the movie Ant-man and San Andreas
What is a genre? According to the oxford dictionaries, genre is defined as ‘a style or
category of art, music, or literature.’ Through this definition we can define a movie genre as a
style or category of a movie. There are a wide variety of movie genre, some examples of
these movie genre are action, adventure, sci-fi, horror, fiction and fantasy. It is importance for
a movie to have a genre, this way a movie will be able to have its own category by having the
same kind of aspect. With the genre assign to each and every movie, it will be easier for the
viewer to determine the expectation they have for the movie.
What is the difference between an adventure movie and a disaster movie? An
adventure movie is a movie that shows exciting experiences that the main character had been
through. Movies, such as Star Wars, Batman, Ant-man and Hunger Games, are adventure
movies. For a disaster movie, it shows the tragic experience when a tragedy normally natural
disaster occurs. San Andreas, Everest, Titanic, and World War Z are examples of a disaster
movie. The movie that I have chosen for adventure based movie is Ant-man and for disaster
based movie is San Andreas. The movie Ant-man is basically about a man who is once a thief
get discover by an ex-hero, which train him to be the Ant-man. While, the movie San
Andreas is about a guy who is from a part of a rescue team overcome all the obstacle when a
suddenly and serious earthquake occur in San Andreas to protect his family.
There are many differences between the movie Ant-man and San Andreas. One of the
aspect that is different between both movies is the protagonist. The leading character for the
movie Ant-man is Scott Lang while the leading character for the movie San Andreas is
Raymond Gaines. The characteristic that differentiate both the character is Scott Lang have
lesser self-confidence compare to Raymond Gaines which is confidence enough to always
challenge his limitations. Scott Lang once try to refuse to become the Ant-man when he is
asked to as he felt he did not have what it takes to become the Ant-man. For Raymond
Gaines, he is very confident of what he can do by risking his life to save all those who are in
danger. The background of the protagonist in both the movies is also different. Scott Lang,
which is a master thief that just leave the prison, have a bad background, whereas Raymond
Gaines, which is a rescue helicopter pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department, have a good
background.
The supporting character is also different in many aspects. The antagonist from the
movies are Maggie from Ant-man and Emma from San Andreas. They are both ex-wife to the
Protagonist. The difference between the two supporting characters is their ending with the
Protagonist. In Ant-man, Scott Lang is able to visit her daughter, Cassie, but Maggie is still
with Paxton, Cassie’s soon-to-be step-father. According to Jeremy (2015), ‘Scott has dinner
with Paxton, Maggie, and Cassie. As gratitude for his heroism, Paxton lets Scott off the hook
and covers for him’. In the movie San Andreas, Raymond Gaines ended up saving all his ex-
wife and revived her daughter from drowning in the aftermath of the earthquake. According
to bafleming, ‘the family along with Ben and Ollie watch the sunset, on the destroyed and
radically altered geography of the San Francisco Bay Area, and they talk about the future’.
The other difference between Ant-man and San Andreas is the settings they used in
the movie. One of the settings that take place in the movie Ant-man is in the Pym Tech
building. This is where the Scott Lang dressed as Ant-man and infiltrate the building in order
to steal the yellow jacket suit to prevent it falling to the wrong hands, but he was caught as
the person who invented the yellow jacket knew he was going to show up and try to steal his
yellow jacket. Whereas one of the settings in the movie San Andreas take place in the cliff of
3. San Fernando Valley. This is the place where the movie started where a rockslide cause a
girl’s car fall to the edge of the cliff. Then, Raymond Gaines risk his life in order to save the
girl that is trapped in her car. The helicopter was between the gaps of the cliff in order to get
as low enough to save the girl, the helicopter almost crashed as the pilot of the helicopter get
to pull the helicopter up in time before the car when crashing down the bottomless cliff.
In conclusion, the two movies, which are Ant-man and San Andreas, are totally
different movies as the back ground of the protagonist is different, the ending of the story
with the supporting character and the settings where the story happens. Therefore, it is
important for us to determine which genre is the movie. This is because we will have
different expectations for different movies. Analysing the movie is also important as we will
be able to know better and remember the scene that happened in the movie more clearly and
also to increase our understanding to the movie.
