Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the most important composers of the classical and romantic period. He began losing his hearing in his late 20s, yet went on to compose some of his most famous symphonies and other works while deaf. As his hearing deteriorated, Beethoven relied on his lifetime of musical experience and composition skills to remember how instruments sounded together. He also used techniques like feeling piano vibrations with a pencil in his mouth to help with composition as his deafness progressed. Despite being almost completely deaf, Beethoven wrote many respected works, including six symphonies and the famous Moonlight Sonata.
