2. ‘After you left’ was made in 6 days, three weeks after the filmmakers came up with the idea for the film. The cast is 100% indigenous, and it is the first Native Sci-Fi Fantasy/Drama in Tsilhqot’in language.
4. ‘Excuse Me’ was made for $300, which was the cost of sound work in post-production.
5. ‘EX-SEX’ was shot in an actual Eichler house, completely outfitted with authentic mid-century modern furniture. The second shooting location was a boat named passion. Will Wiesenfeld did music for the film under the moniker “Baths”. The movie was cast via Facebook.
6. ‘The High Level Bridge’ was made for $500. Director Trevor Anderson accidentally dropped a Sony camera 200 ft unto ice, but it did not break and still works.
7. ‘Incident by a Bank’ features over 96 different people, meticulously choreographed in front of the camera. The film looks as though it is shot in real-time with no cuts , but it is actually a compilation of 4 different takes.
11. ‘The Pact’ takes place in a house where a woman had just died, and was shot in a house where a woman had coincidentally just passed away. The majority of the set design was made up of her things. Director Nicolas McCarthy decided to make another movie after seeing a cut of Calvin Reeder’s first feature, and began shooting the pact 6 weeks later. His short will be playing before Reeder’s feature film in this year’s Festival.
12. ‘Pioneer’ features two main characters, one of which had never acted before. It is 4-year-old Myles Brooks.
13. ‘Protoparticles’ was shot in the Director’s apartment and his grandmother’s home. The space suit is a real Soviet space suit from the 60’s that has actually been in space.
14. ‘Redemption’ was made with $25,000 worth of services at NBC Universal, won from a raffle at the NBC Universal Party at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. The film was made in four days in New Zealand and was edited in 6 days. The team worked with on this film was finishing one of the Twilight movies at the time.
15. ‘The Rocket Boy’ has the youngest Director for the Shorts programs, and possible this year’s Sundance Film Festival (he was 19 at the time). Most of the lighting in the film was done with traditional light fixtures and 90W bulbs. All of the scenes were filmed at the Producer’s parent’s house and garage.
16. ‘Something Left, Something Taken’ received only $600 from Puffin Foundation LTD. The production took two and a half years.
17. ‘Stones’ features an actress that had never acted before. She is a student at the University of Hawai’i, and auditioned at the last minute because she tagged along with her roommate to the auditions.
19. ‘Yelp (With Apologies to Allen Ginsberg’s “Howl”’ is directed by Tiffany Shlain, who is the only director in the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with 2 films. She is the narrator of Yelp, and came up with the concept during the making of her feature-length Sundance submission ‘Connected’. These filmmakers bring with them vibrant creativity and a fresh perspective that embodies the spirit of Sundance. We will continue to support these filmmakers and provide a venue for them to show their work.
