“The Apple Park”, designed by Norman
Foster and Partners and completed in 2017,
was constructed on a 175-acre land with a
2.8 million square foot main building with
four stories, housing 12,000 employees on a
daily basis. The Apple Campus building is
designed as a spaceship, giving it a unique
and futuristic look. The design incorporates
advanced technology and sustainable
features to create an intelligent building.
3. SUSTAINABLE FEATURES
The Apple Campus is designed as a net-zero energy building
that generates more energy than it consumes. The building
has solar panels, which provide clean energy and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
• The building is intended to be one of the
most energy efficient in the world. The site is
to be entirely powered by renewable energy,
with solar panels installed on the roof capable
of generating 17 megawatts of power.
sufficient to power 75% during peak
daytime, and making it one of the largest solar
roofs of the world.
• The other 4 megawatts are generated onsite
using Bloom Energy Server fuel cells, which
are powered by biofuel or natural gas.
4. Smart Building Automation System
• The Apple Campus has a smart building automation
system that controls heating, cooling, and lighting.
The system also monitors energy usage and provides
real-time data to building managers.
• The automation system helps reduce energy
consumption. improve comfort, and lower operating
costs. Rather than using air conditioning, 4,300
hollow concrete slabs act as the floors
ceilings and HVAC system, funneling cool and
warm air through the offices, in effect making it a
‘breathing’ building.
• The air flows freely between the inside and outside
of the building, providing natural ventilation and
obviating the need for HVAC systems during nine
months of the year
5. Indoor Environmental Quality
• The Apple Campus is designed to provide a healthy indoor
environment for employees.
• The building has advanced air filtration systems that remove
pollutants and improve air quality.
• The natural lighting and open spaces create a comfortable
and productive work environment.
