UPES Law students shine at Surana & Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition'15

Law Students of UPES Shine in National Competition
A four member team of third year students of BBA LLB at ‘College of Legal Studies’(COLS) in UPES comprising Ms
Deepmala Dutta, Mr Shreyas Jain, Ms Sumi & Mr Ayush Agarwal brought laurels not only to the University but also
to the state of Uttarakhand at the north India round of “Surana & Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court
Competition,2015” organized by the famous law firm “Surana & Surana International Attorneys” in collaboration
with ‘National Law Institute University’ at Bhopal. This competition saw 16 teams participating from various
national Law Universities and Law schools from more than 7 states including Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab,
Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. UPES was the only participating team from
Uttarakhand state and bagged three awards in this competition. It bagged the “Runners Up” position and also
secured a place in the three best “Memorial Awards”. It was also chosen as the most popular team by the
audiences for the “ Surana Spirit Award”. Army Institute of Law, Mohali were declared as the winners of this
competition.
Sharing details about the competition Mr Arun Dhand – Director of Media Affairs in UPES disclosed that the moot
problem of this competition was based on contemporary issues on criminal laws for trials on murder, forgery,
conspiracy, abetment and cybercrimes and a unique format was followed which included full trial procedure
including examination of witnesses. The presence of former chief justice of India Justice (retd) P P Naolekar at the
closing ceremony and of Mr N K Jain, former judge of High court of Madhya Pradesh motivated the participants
while the former opined that such competitions will go a long way in encouraging youngsters to join the Bar and
improve litigation quality the former shared that such types of events will prove to be very helpful to overall
development of law graduates since the journey of litigation begins from trial courts. Prof(Dr) S S Singh, Director of
NLIU, Bhopal thanked Dr Ravichandra, Partner in Surana & Surana International Attorneys for hosting the event
and contributing towards nation building in the space of Legal studies.
Dr Tabrez Ahmed, Director of COLS in UPES informed that under his mentorship he had constituted a Moot Court
Association in UPES when he took charge a few years back. This association has a faculty wing and a student wing,
both these wings assists the teams which get shortlisted to represent University. The faculty members
instrumental in preparing this particular team included Dr Mamta Rana, Ms Kavya Salim,Mr. Anubhav Kumar and
from the student wing Mr Siddarth Satpathy pursuing his pre final year of BA LLB. The winning students and the
supporting faculty members were complemented by the chancellor Dr S J Chopra, Dr Shrihari – Vice Chancellor,
Mr Arun Dhand, Director of Media Affairs and Dr Tabrez Ahmed, Director of College of Legal Studies.
