 Workshop: Integrating E-learning into ELT
Definition of E-learning
An education innovation that has transformed the
use of traditional way of learning to the use of
modern technology such as video, computer, CD
ROM, internet, intranet, satellite, etc. to deliver
content of learning through electronic equipment
in various learning environment ranging from
learning with the teacher in the classroom using
computer, web-based learning and distant
learning.
http://www.capella.edu/elearning
Definition of E-learning
The delivery of a learning, training or
education program by electronic means. E-
learning involves the use of a computer or
electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in
some way to provide training, educational or
learning material.
http://derekstockley.com.au/elearning-definition.html
Definition of E-learning
Traditional way of teaching
- uses chalks and board
- content of learning
delivered by teacher
- learning environment is
limited with only teachers
in class
- have limited choice of
learning
E-learning
- uses modern technology
- content of learning
delivered by electronic
equipment
- learning environment
ranges from being with T
in class to using computer
with teachers and using
computer on one’s own
- have various choices of
learning
Uses of E-learning in ELT
Tools vs Tutors
supplement complement Blended learning Fully online
E-learning as tools
 Supplement –
 part of classroom instruction
 learners make the decision to learn or not
 activities e.g. reviewing what has been taught,
doing exercises, or doing reading assignment
before class discussion, etc.
E-learning as tools
 Complement –
 a part of classroom instruction
 teachers assign learners to learn specific content
or search for specific info on the internet.
 learners do the activities designed by teachers
 work is evaluated at the end
E-learning as tutors
 Replaces teaching in the classroom. The
content is completed in itself and can be
divided into 2 types:
 Blended learning – combines online and face-
to-face approaches
 Fully online – truly online and learners are on
their own.

2 approaches in using technology
for language learning
 Focus on TECHNOLOGY
 What is technology and how I can
use it in teaching English?
– the reasons of use of technology is
from Ts
2 approaches in using technology
for language learning
 Focus on PEDAGOGY
 What language learning do students
need and how can technology help?
 Ts think about what Ss needs (curriculum)
and what technology can help Ss to learn
better
Integrating E-learning into ELT
(Things to consider)
TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM
integrate
WHY?
HOW?
WHEN?
WHAT? WHERE?
WHY?
 What is/are your purpose(s) of integrating
technology into your English curriculum?
 To expose learners to authentic use of language
 To consolidate learning (practice everything
learnt)
 To motivate learning
 To prepare learners for the real world
HOW?
 How are you going to use the technology for
the learners?
 As a tool to supplement or complement your
class?
 Or as a tutor to replace your teaching?
WHAT?
 What resources are you going to use?
 a non-dedicated web site
 a dedicated web site
 an in-house CD ROM
 a commercial CD ROM or an online program
 an in-house online program
WHERE?
 In which part of the curriculum do you want
to integrate technology?
 At the end of each unit
 One project after mid term and another project
after the final
 One main project at the end of the semester
 Etc.
WHEN?
 At what stage of your instruction do you want
to include technology?
 At the beginning
 At the presentation stage
 At the Practice stage
 At the end (Task stage)
STEPS
 Decide why you want to include technology
in your teaching (WHY?)
 Decide how technology is going to be used in
your teaching  Tools or Tutors (HOW?)
 Survey ways technology can be used
(WHAT?)
 Study the curriculum (map it out)
STEPS (continued)
 Decide where (which units) and when (at
which stage of lessons) to integrate
technology (WHERE & WHEN?)
 Design the activities/projects
Online learning
 In online learning, the key element is the use
of internet and is described as the learning
experience that is realised with the use of
some technology
Distance learning
 Distance learning is relatively a new form of
education from the point of view of the time it
appeared.
 Universities are offering distance learning degrees
dedicated to everyone, as long as they meet entry
requirements and qualifications. So it became
possible for students from Europe for instance, to
easily attend an American college without the need
to travel.
Difference between online and distance
learning
 Location
 Interaction
 Intention
Blended learning
 is a combination of learning online and the
traditional on-site learning (in a class-room).
