Should You Stretch Before Exercising?

In the past, we were taught that before exercising or playing sports, we first
needed to stretch.

That notion has since been debunked by research, most notably by a U.S.
Centers of Disease Control and Prevention study back in 2004. It was
determined that stretching before exercise did not prevent injuries that are
supposed to be caused by the workout.

The type of stretching that was highlighted in this report, and plenty other
studies, is static stretching. It is the act of holding a lengthened muscle and
sustaining the position for around 20 seconds or more. Static stretching not
only has close to zero benefits in exercise or workouts, it can also decrease the
generation of power in muscles and negatively affect performance.
Those who do prefer to stretch before exercising should consider performing
dynamic stretching instead. It involves continuous movements, covers different
ranges of motion simultaneously, and targets multiple muscles. It can
strengthen not just the muscles, but also the connective tissues behind the
muscles.
Experts also recommend doing dynamic stretching not just before exercising or
playing. It could also be performed after a workout, because during this time,
muscles are warm, and thus, more elastic. Dynamic stretching every once in a
while during the day can also benefit the body and one’s overall well-being.
