6. • Gen 36:12 – Amalek was Esau’s grandson, Esau was Jacob’s twin brother
• Ex 17:8 – Amalek came down to fight against Israel in the first major battle
fought by Israel after the Exodus
• Ex 17:14Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book as a memorial and
recite it to Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under
heaven.“
• Ex 17:16 and he said, "The LORD has sworn; the LORD will have war against
Amalek from generation to generation."
• Nu 24:20 And he looked atAmalek and took up his discourse and said, "Amalek
was the first of the nations, But his end shall be destruction."
• Dt 25:17-19 "Remember what Amalek did to you along the way when you came
out from Egypt, 18 how he met you along the way and attacked among you all
the stragglers at your rear when you were faint and weary; and he did not fear
God. 19 "Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you
rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God
gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek
from under heaven; you must not forget.

7. • 1 Sam 15:1-3 1Then Samuel said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to
anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore,
listen to the words of the LORD. 2 "Thus says the LORD of hosts, 'I
will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself
against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. 3 'Now
go and strikeAmalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not
spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant,
ox and sheep, camel and donkey.'"

execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, so the LORD has done this
thing to you this day. 19 "Moreover the LORD will also give over
Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, therefore
tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Indeed the LORD will
give over the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines!"

8. • Ps 83 the Amalekites are mentioned among the enemies of
the LORD
• Es 3:1 Haman, who hated the Jews on account of Mordecai
was an Agagite – a descendent of Agag, king of the Amalekites
• Es 9:24 24 For Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite,
the adversary of all the Jews, had schemed against the Jews to
destroy them and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to disturb them
and destroy them.

9. • 1 David and his men return to Ziklag after the Philistine
leaders wanted them removed. The journey took 3 days.
• 2-3The Amalekites had raided Ziklag, taking everything
and everyone, killing no one, but burning the town.
• 4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted
their voices and wept until there was no strength in them
to weep.
• 6 David’s men speak of stoning him. But David
strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
• 7-8 Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of
Ahimelech, "Please bring me the ephod." So Abiathar
brought the ephod to David. David inquired of the LORD,
saying, "Shall I pursue this band? Shall I overtake them?"
And He said to him, "Pursue, for you will surely overtake
them, and you will surely rescue all."

• 11-12 David finds an Egyptian slave who was left behind and
gives him food and water to revive him.
• 13-15 David convinces the slave to lead him to the Amalekites
• 16 David finds the raiding party spread out, eating, drinking,
and dancing because of the spoil they took
• 17 David slaughtered them from the twilight until the evening
of the next day; and not a man of them escaped, except four
hundred young men who rode on camels and fled.

13. • 18-20 David recovered everything – wives, sons, daughters,
animals, and more. He gained more than he had lost.
• 22The wicked and worthless men do not want to share the
spoil with the men who waited
• 23Then David said, "You must not do so, my brothers, with
what the LORD has given us, who has kept us and delivered
into our hand the band that came against us.
• 24-25 David created a new statute for Judah based on this,
realizing that it is the LORD who delivers
• 26-31 David sends some of the spoil as gifts to the elders of
Judah in 14 towns/areas “from the spoil of the enemies of the
LORD.”

14. • Change of scene – back to the battle between Israel & the
Philistines.
• 1 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the
men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell slain
on Mount Gilboa.
• 2The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the
Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua
the sons of Saul.
• 3The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers hit
him; and he was badly wounded by the archers.
• 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword
and pierce me through with it, otherwise these
uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and
make sport of me." But his armor bearer would not, for
he was greatly afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on
it.

region and the Philistines came in and lived in

• 8-10The Philistines find Saul and his 3 sons, cut
off Saul’s head, put his weapons in the house of
their gods, hung his body on the wall of Beth-
shan
• 11-13 men of Jabesh-Gilead hear about Saul and
go to recover his body and the bodies of his sons
and burn the bodies in Jabesh and then buried
their bones under the tamarisk tree and then
fast 7 days.

16. • Scene moves back to Ziklgag, likely about 10+ days after Saul
died.
• 2 On the third day, behold, a man came out of the camp from
Saul, with his clothes torn and dust on his head. And it came
about when he came to David that he fell to the ground and
prostrated himself.
• 3Then David said to him, "From where do you come?" And he
said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel."
• 4 David said to him, "How did things go? Please tell me." And
he said, "The people have fled from the battle, and also many
of the people have fallen and are dead; and Saul and Jonathan
his son are dead also."
• 5 So David said to the young man who told him, "How do you
know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?"
• 6The young man who told him said, "By chance I happened to
be on Mount Gilboa, and behold, Saul was leaning on his
spear.And behold, the chariots and the horsemen pursued
him closely.

17. • 7 "When he looked behind him, he saw me and
called to me. And I said, 'Here I am.'
• 8 "He said to me, 'Who are you?' And I answered
him, 'I am an Amalekite.'
• 9 "Then he said to me, 'Please stand beside me
and kill me, for agony has seized me because my
life still lingers in me.'
• 10 "So I stood beside him and killed him,
because I knew that he could not live after he
had fallen. And I took the crown which was on
his head and the bracelet which was on his arm,
and I have brought them here to my lord."

18. • 11-12 David and his men tear their clothes, weep, and fast until
evening for Saul and his sons
• 14Then David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to
stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?"
• 15 And David called one of the young men and said, "Go, cut
him down." So he struck him and he died.
• 16 David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your
mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the
LORD'S anointed.'"
• 17-18 David created a lament for Israel to remember Saul and
Jonathan

19. • 19 "Your beauty, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How have
the mighty fallen!
• 20 "Tell it not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon,Or
the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,The daughters of the
uncircumcised will exult.
• 21 "O mountains of Gilboa, Let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields
of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,The
shield of Saul, not anointed with oil.
• 22 "From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,The
bow of Jonathan did not turn back, And the sword of Saul did not
return empty.
• 23 "Saul and Jonathan, beloved and pleasant in their life,And in
their death they were not parted;They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions.

20. • 24 "O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, Who clothed you
luxuriously in scarlet, Who put ornaments of gold on your
apparel.
• 25 "How have the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!
Jonathan is slain on your high places.
• 26 "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;You have
been very pleasant to me.Your love to me was more
wonderfulThan the love of women.
• 27 "How have the mighty fallen, And the weapons of war
perished!"
