Introduction to 2 Samuel 5 & 6
• David is established as King of Israel.
• David wanted to re-establish worship in the Tabernacle (tent) in Jerusalem
instead of Shiloh.
• The Ark of the Covenant was in a house 10 miles away and had not been
in the Tabernacle for 20 years.
3. 2 Samuel 5:1-8
1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying,
"Indeed we are your bone and your flesh. 2 Also, in time past, when Saul was
king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the
Lord said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over Israel.'"
3 Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David
made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed
David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and
he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six
months, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.
6 And the king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the
inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, "You shall not come in here;
but the blind and the lame will repel you," thinking, "David cannot come in
here." 7 Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion (that is, the City of David).
• The Jebusites were taunting and mocking David and Israel.
8 Now David said on that day, "Whoever climbs up by way of the water shaft and
defeats the Jebusites (the lame and the blind, who are hated by David's soul),
he shall be chief and captain." Therefore they say, "The blind and the lame shall
not come into the house."
• Jerusalem was a fortified city and their source of water was a water shaft
from springs outside the walls.
City of David
4. Gihon Spring in Jerusalem
2 Samuel 5:9-16
9 Then David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the City of David. And David
built all around from the Millo and inward. 10 So David went on and became
great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him. 11 Then Hiram king of Tyre sent
messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters and masons. And they
built David a house. 12 So David knew that the Lord had established him as king
over Israel, and that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people
Israel.
13 And David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he had
come from Hebron. Also more sons and daughters were born to David.
• There are 11 sons mentioned by name who were born in Jerusalem in
verses 14-16.
Summary of 2 Samuel 5:14-25: The Philistines
• The Philistines deploy to the Valley of Rephaim to attack Israel.
• King David inquires of the Lord and is told that the Philistines will be
delivered into his hand.
• The Philistines are driven back from Geba as far as Gezer.
King David Battles the Philistines
5. 2 Samuel 6:1-2
1 Again David gathered all the choice men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2 And David
arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah to bring
up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the Name, the Lord of
Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim.
The Ark of the Covenant – 1 Samuel 4-7
• Hophni & Phinehas (sons of Eli, the High Priest) carried the Ark into battle
against the Philistines.
• The Ark was captured but returned to the Israelites after 7 months because
the Philistines were afflicted with tumors.
• For the past 20 years the Ark had been at Kirjath Jearim (10 miles west of
Jerusalem) in the house of Abinadab.
2 Samuel 6:3-8
3 So they set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of
Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab,
drove the new cart. 4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which
was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark.
5 Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds
of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on
sistrums, and on cymbals.
6 And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the
ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 7 Then the anger of the
Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he
died there by the ark of God. 8 And David became angry because of the Lord's
outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this
day.
6. 2 Samuel 6:9-11
9 David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, "How can the ark of the Lord
come to me?" 10 So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the
City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.
11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three
months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.
What happened here?
• The Ark and other holy things were to be carried by the sons of Kohath
using only the poles inserted into the side rings.
• Numbers 4:15
15 And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and
all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then the
sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch any holy
thing, lest they die.
• King David and the Israelites were transporting the Ark on an ox cart
instead of the prescribed method.
• King David’s anger was probably directed at himself for his carelessness
with the Ark.
• King David followed God’s directive from this point forward with the Ark (1
Chronicles 15:1-15).
2 Samuel 6:12-15
12 Now it was told King David, saying, "The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-
Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God." So David went
and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of
David with gladness. 13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the Lord had
gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. 14 Then David danced
before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. 15 So
David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and
with the sound of the trumpet.
7. Two Issues in 2 Samuel 6:14
• David’s clothing – a linen ephod (close fitting, sleeveless outer vest
extending to the hips worn by priests).
• David’s dancing – a whirling style dance.
• Some scholars interpret that it was an erotic dance done with
inappropriate exposure related to improper clothing based on Michal’s
response?
2 Samuel 6:16-17
16 Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul's
daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling
before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. 17 So they brought the ark of
the Lord, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had
erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the
Lord. 18 And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace
offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 19 Then he
distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the
women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake
of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul
came out to meet David, and said, "How glorious was the king of Israel today,
uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the
base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!"
• Sarcasm is probably the tone of her voice!
What is Michal’s problem? (Speculation)
• She thought that the dancing was not befitting of the King of Israel.
• David was not dressed as the King.
• David was not acting like the “King” and was acting like the “common
folks.”
• She may have been jealous that it was not her father, King Saul, who was
bringing the Ark back to the people.
2 Samuel 6:21-22
21 So David said to Michal, " It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your
father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over
Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. 22 And I will be even more
undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the
maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor."
8. King David’s Response
• David as King is bringing the presence of God back to the Israelites.
• This is a joyful occasion and God wants celebration.
• David’s actions were for the delight of the Lord, and not for the maidens.
• David’s defense is also his humility before the Lord.
2 Samuel 6:23
23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
• Scripture does not say if David ceased to have marital relations with
Michal, or if the Lord disciplined her for her contempt of David.
Application of 2 Samuel 5 & 6 Scriptures
• What does 2 Samuel 5 & 6 teach us about the worship of God?
What does it mean to worship God?
• Worship = to bow down; to serve.
• Worship is a surrender of self to God.
• Psalm 95:6
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our
Maker.
• Psalm 96:9
9 Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all
the earth.
What is the difference between Praise and Worship?
• Praise is the joyful recounting of all God has done for us.
• Psalm 9:1
1 I will praise You, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your
marvelous works.
• Worship is an attitude of the heart that includes surrender of self and
humility; it is a lifestyle and not just an activity.
9. What did Jesus say about worship?
• Matthew 4:10
10 And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For it is
written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall
serve.'"
• John 4:24
24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and
truth."
• Jesus was teaching that worship was not regulated by location or Old
Testament provisions.
John 4:24
24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
• "God is Spirit," – God is invisible, but Jesus is the physical manifestation of
God.
• "must worship" – absolutely necessary for believers.
• "in spirit" – the inward heart attitude of man carried and led by the Holy
Spirit.
• "in truth" – true worship is a response to true views of God.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 29:13 in addressing the scribes and Pharisees about false
worship.
• Matthew 15:7-9
7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 'These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"
What are the conflicts of today about principles of worship?
(Regulative vs. Normative)
• Regulative Principles - Corporate worship of God is to be founded upon
specific directions in scripture.
• Normative Principles – Corporate worship can include anything not
expressly forbidden in scripture.
• Some are inhibited in expressive worship because “reverence” was the
focus for worship during their youth.
10. Regulative Principles of Worship – More Common in Reformed Churches.
• Reading Bible – 1 Timothy 4:13
• Preaching – 2 Timothy 4:2
• Singing (Bible & Hymns) – Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16
• Praying – Matthew 21:13
• Sacraments (Baptism and Lord’s Supper) – Matthew 28:19; 26:26-28
• Giving / Tithing – 2 Corinthians 9:7
Normative Principles of Worship – More common in Evangelical Churches.
• Includes the Regulative Principles of Worship.
• Allows for cultural expressions of worship.
• A strength is physical expressions of worship.
• A weakness is that it opens the door to worldliness and can become
entertainment based.
• Churches are now defining themselves by the style of music sung in
corporate worship (contemporary, blended, classical, etc.).
9 Physical Expressions of Worship in Psalms – Verbal.
1. Speaking – Psalm 34:1
1 I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2. Shouting – Psalm 27:6b

I will sing and make music to the LORD.
3. Singing – Psalm 47:6a
6a Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
9 Physical Expressions of Worship in Psalms – Posture.
4. Bowing – Psalm 95:6
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
5. Standing – Psalm 119:120
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you;
I stand in awe of your laws.
6. Dancing – Psalm 149:3
3 Let them praise his name with dancing
and make music to him with timbrel and harp.
11. 9 Physical Expressions of Worship in Psalms – Hands.
7. Playing Instruments – Psalm 33:2
2 Praise the Lord with the harp;
make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
8. Clapping – Psalm 47:1
1 Clap your hands, all you nations;
shout to God with cries of joy.
9. Lifting Hands – Psalm 63:4
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
Closing Thoughts & Scripture:
• Worshipping God is a very personal experience and we must follow the
Holy Spirit in the expressions as it leads us to worship.
• Do not judge others’ expressions of worship of God!
• 1 Samuel 16:7b
7b For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward
appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

23a For the wages of sin is death,
• Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.

penalty for our sin.
• The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the “second death” explained in
Revelation 21:8.
Revelation 21:8 NKJV

sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with
fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

13. Romans 10:9-10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that
God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one
believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto
salvation.
Romans 10:13 NKJV
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
