2 samuel 1a Love your enemies

  1. 1. Stone Creek You are welcomewww.rossvillechurch.com781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741 February 3, 2013 1
  2. 2. 2 Samuel 1King Saul is dead. Saul was alwaysstubbornly disobedient,And he has paid the price. 2
  3. 3. 2 Samuel 1 1 Now it came to pass after the death ofSaul, when David was returned from the slaughterof the Amalekites, and David had abode two daysin Ziklag; 2 It came even to pass on the thirdday, that, behold, a man came out of the campfrom Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon hishead: and so it was, when he came to David, thathe fell to the earth, and did obeisance. 3
  4. 4. 3 And David said unto him, From whence comestthou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp ofIsrael am I escaped. 4 And David said untohim, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me.And he answered, That the people are fled from thebattle, and many of the people also are fallen anddead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also. He probably thinks of this as good news to David, but he is sadly mistaken. 4
  5. 5. 5 And David said unto the young man that told him,How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his sonbe dead? 6 And the young man that told him said,As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, thechariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 5
  6. 6. 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, andcalled unto me. And I answered, Here am I. 8 Andhe said unto me, Who art thou? And I answeredhim, I am an Amalekite. 9 He said unto me again,Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: foranguish is come upon me, because my life is yetwhole in me. 6
  7. 7. 10 So I stood upon him, andslew him, because I was surethat he could not live after thathe was fallen: and I took thecrown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on hisarm, and have brought themhither unto my lord. 7
  8. 8. 11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rentthem; and likewise all the men that were with him:12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted untileven, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for thepeople of the LORD, and for the house of Israel;because they were fallen by the sword. Even though Saul had tried for years to catch and kill David, David loved Saul. This was not good news; it was heart-breaking news. 8
  9. 9. 13 And David said unto the young man that toldhim, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am theson of a stranger, an Amalekite. 14 And David saidunto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forththine hand to destroy the LORDS anointed? 9
  10. 10. 15 And David called one of the young men, andsaid, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote himthat he died. Justice His lies, which he hoped would bring David’s favor, turned on him and brought his death. Never do wrong seeking good. It will turn on you and bite you. 10
  11. 11. 16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thyhead; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORDS anointed. 17 AndDavid lamented with this lamentation over Sauland over Jonathan his son: Lord, give me a heart like David, who loved his enemy and wept over him. That’s the kind of heart we need. Don’t rejoice when your enemy suffers; that can turn God’s favor from you. Psalm 24:17-18 11
  12. 12. 18 (Also he bade them teachthe children of Judah the useof the bow: behold, it iswritten in the book ofJasher.) The Philistine archers were very effective in defeating their enemies. It was an arrow that wounded Saul, so that he killed himself. 12
  13. 13. David’s Song of Lamentation19 Thebeauty of Israel is slain upon Thy highplaces: how are the mighty fallen! 20 Tell it not inGath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lestthe daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest thedaughters of the uncircumcised triumph. The enemies of righteousness will rejoice at the downfall of God’s people. Don’t broadcast such events. 13
  14. 14. It’s sad how many church members love to tell everything negative against their church. We need to tell the good and keep anythingnegative in our heart for a matter of prayer. The enemies of righteousness will be made glad when they hear your gossip. 14
  15. 15. 21 (David’s song cont.) Ye mountains of Gilboa, letthere be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you,nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of themighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, asthough he had not been anointed with oil. David cursed the mountains which did not protect the King of Israel. 15
  16. 16. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of themighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, andthe sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 Saul andJonathan were lovely and pleasant in theirlives, and in their death they were not divided: theywere swifter than eagles, they were stronger thanlions. 16
  17. 17. 24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, whoclothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who puton ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 25 Howare the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle!O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan:very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love(affection) to me was wonderful, passing the loveof women. 27 How are the mighty fallen, and theweapons of war perished! 17
  18. 18. Even though Saul was not in most ways a good king, he did bring prosperity to the nation. And he was a courageous warrior. David made no mention of Saul’s faults. He only praised his good qualities. Lesson? 18
  19. 19. Matthew 5 44 But I say unto you, Love your ene-mies, bless them that curse you, do good to themthat hate you, and pray for them which despitefullyuse you, and persecute you; 45 That ye may be thechildren of your Father which is in Heaven: for Hemaketh His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. The vast majority of people in this world do not love God, but in fact hate Him. Yet He blesses all with the blessings of life. Let us be like our Father. 19
  20. 20. Matthew 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, whatreward have ye? do not even the publicans thesame? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, whatdo ye more than others? do not even the publicansso? 48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Fatherwhich is in Heaven is perfect. David wrote a song of lamentation for King Saul, who had mistreated David for years. Jesus said that is being like our Father in Heaven: Mature and complete in His Love. 20
