• 1 Samuel 9.2
And he (Kish) had a son, whose name was Saul,
a choice young man, and a goodly: and there
was not among the children of Israel a goodlier
person than he: from his shoulders and upward
he was higher than any of the people.
(cf 1 Samuel 10.23)

Deuteronomy 17.14-15
When thou art come unto the land which the Lord
thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt
dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over
me, like as all the nations that are about me; thou
shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the
Lord thy God shall choose: one from among thy
brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest
not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy
brother.

And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to
Mizpeh; and said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith
the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt,
and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and
out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that
oppressed you: and ye have this day rejected your God,
who himself saved you out of all your adversities and
your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set
a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before
the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.

9. Conflict with the Philistines
• 1 Samuel 13.5
And the Philistines gathered themselves
together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and
people as the sand which is on the sea shore in
multitude: and they came up, and pitched in
Michmash, eastward from Beth-aven.

• 1 Samuel 13.6-7
When the men of Israel saw that they were in a
strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the
people did hide themselves in caves, and in
thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in
pits. And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan
to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he
was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed
him trembling.

11. Saul is censured
• 1 Samuel 13.13-14
And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly:
thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord
thy God, which he commanded thee: for now
would the Lord have established thy kingdom upon
Israel for ever. But now thy kingdom shall not
continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his
own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to
be captain over his people, because thou hast not
kept that which the Lord commanded thee.

anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel:

remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he
laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from
Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly
destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but
slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox
and sheep, camel and ass.

Therefore it shall be, when the Lord thy God
hath given thee rest from all thine enemies
round about, in the land which the Lord thy God
giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that
thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek
from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

15. Failure regarding the Amalekites!
• 1 Samuel 15.7-9
And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until
thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. And
he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and
utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of
the sword. But Saul and the people spared Agag,
and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of
the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good,
and would not utterly destroy them: but every
thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed
utterly.

16. Excuses, excuses!
• 1 Samuel 15.13-15
And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him,
Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the
commandment of the Lord. And Samuel said, What
meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine
ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? And
Saul said, They have brought them from the
Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the
sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy
God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

17. Excuses, excuses!
• 1 Samuel 15.20-
…obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone
the way which the Lord sent me, and have
brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have
utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people
took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of
the things which should have been utterly
destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in
Gilgal.

18. Samuel’s inditement
• 1 Samuel 15.22
And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight
in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying
the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better
than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of
rams.

19. Saul’s disposition changes
• I Samuel 16.14
But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul,
and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
1 Samuel 16.15
And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now,
an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

20. David soothes Saul
• I Samuel 16.23
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was
upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his
hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil
spirit departed from him.

21. Saul’s jealousy of David
• 1 Samuel 18.6-9
And it came to pass as they came, when David was
returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the
women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and
dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and
with instruments of musick. And the women answered
one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his
thousands, and David his ten thousands. And Saul was
very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said,
They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me
they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have
more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that
day and forward

22. Saul’s jealousy of David
• 1 Samuel 18.10-11
And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil
spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David
played with his hand, as at other times: and
there was a javelin in Saul’s hand. And Saul cast
the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to
the wall with it. And David avoided out of his
presence twice.

23. Saul’s Cynical Ploy!
• 1 Samuel 18.20-21
And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and
they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. And
Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a
snare to him, and that the hand of the
Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul
said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in
law in the one of the twain. (NIV - Now you have
a second opportunity to become my son-in-law.)

24. David exceeds the gruesome task!
• 1 Samuel 18.26-29 (NIV)
When the attendants told David these things, he was
pleased to become the king’s son-in-law. So before the
allotted time elapsed, David took his men with him and
went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought
back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to
the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-
law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage.
When Saul realised that the Lord was with David and that
his daughter Michal loved David, Saul became still more
afraid of him, and he remained his enemy for the rest of
his days.

25. Saul’s continuing pursuit of David
• He throws a javelin again! – 1 Samuel 19.10
• He instructs his men to kill David in his home –
1 Samuel 19. 11-16
• The death of Ahimelech in Nob, his family and
priests, women and children – 1 Samuel 22
• Various initiatives to corner and kill David and
his men…

26. David’s despair in the Psalms
• Psalm 59 – “when Saul sent, and they watched
the house to kill him”
• Psalm 52 – “when Doeg the Edomite came
and told Saul and said unto him, ‘David is
come to the house of Ahimelech’”
• Psalm 54 – “when the Ziphims came and said
to Saul, ‘Doth not David hide himself with
us?’”

27. David’s despair in the Psalms
• Psalm 57 – “when he fled from Saul in the
cave”

28. David’s elation in the Psalms
• Psalm 18 – “…who spake unto the Lord the
words of this song in the day that the Lord
delivered him from the hand of his enemies
and from the hand of Saul”.

29. Saul’s life is spared
• 1 Samuel 26.21
Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son
David: for I will no more do thee harm, because
my soul was precious in thine eyes this day:
behold, I have played the fool, and have erred
exceedingly.

30. David makes a strategic decision
• 1 Samuel 27.1
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish
one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing
better for me than that I should speedily escape
into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast
of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

32. Samuel’s rebuke, Saul’s Response
• 1 Samuel 28.16-20
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing the
Lord is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy? And the
Lord hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the Lord hath rent the
kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to
David: because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor
executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the Lord
done this thing unto thee this day. Moreover the Lord will also deliver
Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt
thou and thy sons be with me: the Lord also shall deliver the host of
Israel into the hand of the Philistines. Then Saul fell straightway all
along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of
Samuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread
all the day, nor all the night.

33. Reasons for Saul’s death
• 1 Chronicles 10.13-14
So Saul died for his transgression which he
committed against the Lord, even against the
word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for
asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit,
to enquire of it; and enquired not of the Lord:
therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom
unto David the son of Jesse.
