1 samuel 22b give me a heart like david

  1. 1. Stone Creek www.rossvillechurch.com781 Salem Road, Rossville, GA 30741September 30, 2012 1
  2. 2. 1 Samuel 22 1 David therefore departed thence(Gath), and escaped to the cave Adullam: andwhen his brethren and all his fathers house heardit, they went down thither to him. Bethlehem 2
  3. 3. 2 And everyone that was in distress, and everyonethat was in debt, and everyone that was discon-tented (bitter), gathered themselves unto him; andhe became a captain over them: and there werewith him about four hundred men.Mark 2 17 When Jesus heard it, He saith unto them,They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call therighteous, but sinners to repentance. 3
  4. 4. 3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and hesaid unto the king of Moab, Let my father and mymother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, tillI know what God will do for me. 4 And he broughtthem before the king of Moab: and they dwelt withhim all the while that David was in the hold (stronghold). 4
  5. 5. "Till I know what God will do for me." David didnt say, "Till I decide what to do." Nor, "Till we see what happens." He was waiting on God.David went through a short time of fear and doubt, when he was doing whatever he thought of. But he has repented, and now he is trusting God. He is waiting on Gods direction. 5
  6. 6. 5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide notin the hold; depart, and get thee into the land ofJudah. Then David departed, and came into theforest of Hareth. The Word of the Lord It was time to leave the place of safety, and step out into a place of risk, but also of opportunity. 6
  7. 7. 1 Sam 22:6 When Saul heardthat David was discovered, and the men that were withhim, (now Saul abode inGibeah under a tree inRamah, having his spear inhis hand, and all hisservants were standingabout him;) One thing on his mind. "Find and kill David." 7
  8. 8. 7 Then Saul said unto his servants that stood abouthim, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jessegive every one of you fields and vineyards, andmake you all captains of thousands, and captains ofhundreds; Saul was a Benjamite. "I know yall like David, and think he is great." "But what can he do for you?""Im the king. I can give you fields and vineyards;I can give you positions of authority in the army."David is just an outlaw on the run with a little band of rebellious men. 8
  9. 9. 8 That all of you have conspiredagainst me, and there is none thatsheweth me that my son hathmade a league with the son ofJesse, and there is none of youthat is sorry for me, or shewethunto me that my son hath stirredup my servant against me, to liein wait, as at this day? Sauls envy of David led to paranoia; everyone was against him -- in his mind. 9
  10. 10. He even blamed Jonathan for stirring up this trouble with David.Saul knows that God has chosen David to be king. Its Sauls own fault!1 Samuel 15 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witch-craft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the Word of the Lord, He hath also rejected thee from being king. But Saul will never admit his own culpability. 10
  11. 11. 9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was setover the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son ofJesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son ofAhitub. 10 And he enquired of the Lord for him, andgave him victuals, and gave him the sword ofGoliath the Philistine. Doeg makes it look as though Ahimelech was an ally of David, but we know that David deceived Ahimelech. 11
  12. 12. 11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his fathers house, thepriests that were in Nob: and they came all of themto the king. 12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son ofAhitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. 12
  13. 13. 13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspiredagainst me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thouhast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquiredof God for him, that he should rise against me, tolie in wait, as at this day?Saul was certain that David was just waiting on an opportunity to kill him and take the throne. He believed there was a big conspiracy. Not true! David was waiting -- on God. 13
  14. 14. 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said,And who is so faithful among all thy servants asDavid, which is the kings son-in-law, and goeth atthy bidding, and is honorable in thine house? 15 DidI then begin to inquire of God for him? be it farfrom me: let not the king impute anything unto hisservant, nor to all the house of my father: for thyservant knew nothing of all this, less or more. "I thought David was on a mission for you." "I had inquired of God many times for him, at your bidding." 14
  15. 15. 16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahim-elech, thou, and all thy fathers house. 17 And theking said unto the footmen that stood about him,Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; because theirhand also is with David, and because they knewwhen he fled, and did not shew it to me. But theservants of the king would not put forth their handto fall upon the priests of the Lord. We aint killing no preacher! Folks should be careful how they fight against Gods men. 15
  16. 16. 18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fallupon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that dayfourscore and five (85) persons that did wear alinen ephod. Doeg was a dog; He had no conscience. He would do anything to gain favor with Saul. 16
  17. 17. The slaughter didnt end with the priests.19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he withthe edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, andsheep, with the edge of the sword. 20 And one of thesons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, namedAbiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21 AndAbiathar shewed David that Saul had slain theLords priests. 17
  18. 18. 22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he wouldsurely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of allthe persons of thy fathers house. 23 Abide thou withme, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thylife: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. Unlike Saul, David admitted his own guilt in this slaughter. We have to confess that we are wrong, admitting it to ourselves and to God, Before we can get right! 18
  19. 19. 1 John 1:8-10 (TLB) If we say that we have no sin,we are only fooling ourselves and refusing toaccept the Truth. 9 But if we confess our sins toHim, He can be depended on to forgive us and tocleanse us from every wrong. [And it is perfectlyproper for God to do this for us because Christ diedto wash away our sins.] 10 If we claim we have notsinned, we are lying and calling God a liar, for Hesays we have sinned. 19
  20. 20. Saul blamed his troubles on anybody but himself. He never repented at all.David did some wrong things, but he always admitted and regretted them. Lord give me a heart like David, always ready to confess my wrongs and do right. 20
