2. Genres
• There are a lot of different genres used for music videos such
as pop, R&B, jazz, electronic, rock and rap.
• Some genres of music become more popular with the public
than some e.g. there are generally more pop music videos
than rock videos due to the increase of people preferring pop
music than rock music.
• Genres can easily be identified e.g. pop videos are going to
have fast quick paced clips and a mixture of bright colours and
rap videos are more likely going be dark or clips to show the
artist’s wealth (sport cars, jewellery).
3. Animation
• These are music videos which are created to show comedy
side to a video or show that they video is about something
good.
• Artists may use this as it’s a different type of music videos
compared to others therefore it will stand out as its unique.
• Gorillaz has used animation to create an image of their
personalities by created an animated band, this is well known
band as no on else does this so therefore people remember
the band.

• An example of a narrative music video would be
6. Parody
• Parody music involves changing or copying
existing lyrics of the song in an attempt of
humour. These are usually found on YouTube.
• For example ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic is known for
his humorous songs that make light of popular
culture and often parody songs by other
artists. ‘Bad’ by Michael Jackson is one of his
songs he has wrote a parody version to create
humour.
7. Analysis of a music video
We Can’t Stop- Miley Cyrus
This song features many conventions of
pop and R&B videos such as:
• violence
• drinking
• Relationships
However they are shown in discreet and
unconventional ways.
8. At the start of the music video we
see a close up of Miley, this is
show that the video is to promote
her new image. by having bright
and bold writing it shows that her
image will make the video sell.
However when Miley isn't in the
shot the lighting and the mise-en-scene
of costume and the setting
become dark to show the
promotion of Miley.
9. This particular shot shows a
scenario of a party. It links to
the representation of Miley’s
image of rebelliousness and sex
appeal. The shot is darker and
looks like footage from a party.
An image of marshmallows
relates to the youth, by using
lighters and fire relates to her
image, they used brighter
colours to show her innocence.
10. Close ups are used throughout the video
to show events at the party, it then
shows an image of skull made from
food, which shows rebellion, death or
toxic substances. This symbolises her
trying to get rid off her ‘good girl’ image
for her new rebellious image.
The shot of Miley allows the audience to
see her provocative pose and dancing.
Her attire is all white to show innocence
but it highlights her tattoos and face to
hide her ‘good girl’ image.
11. Editing & Theories
Slow motion and normal editing is used
in order to keep in time with the beat of
the song. Quick images are made to
look more conformed and les eccentric.
However there are different settings
and scenarios that are edited together
to create one party in the video.
A variety of shot are used to highlight
the key themes used in the video and to
show Mileys new image.
For example close ups are used to
present Miley to the audience and her
new attitude.
Goodwin’s theory is applied
to this video as the lyrics
have a relation to what is
being shown on screen.
For example the lyrics show
that she is rebellious, using
worlds like ‘wont’. This is
then backed up as on
screen she is partying and
trying to show her new
image and attitude.
12. Fast Lane- Bad Meets Evil
This song has many conventions of the genre
Rap in its music video such as:
• Dark background/setting
• Artists are wearing dark clothing
• They show their wealth e.g. money
13. At the start of the video, it instantly
shows his wealth and image by
having chains around his neck and
also by having dark clothing it
shows that his image will match it.
By having the word ‘Kindness’ and
‘You All’ on screen him hitting the
word ‘you all’ with ‘kindness’ and
saying ‘kill’. This juxtaposes on
what he is saying as he uses ‘kill’
next to ‘kindness’ to show that he
is not kind and has a dark image.
14. The artist uses animation
of a unicorn and a police
hat to show humour about
having respect to the
police and everyone else.
He also wears dark clothing
to show that he is a bad
character.
In this clip he wears
white clothing to show
his innocence but by
having a darker
background shows he
isn't innocent and
show the opposite
which is bad.
15. This clips shows this particular
artist in a wizard hat and the
word ’victim’, this shows that
he is being portrayed as a bad
person and he is the victim of
his image being portrayed as
someone who is bad.
This image shows skulls which
could imply that he has had to
do bad things to achieve
everything he has wanted, it
also shows that he has a bad
image and using skulls implies
danger and death.
