3. • WHAT IS SOLAR CAR?
A solar car is an electric vehicle powered by a type of
renewable energy, by solar energy obtained from solar
panels on the surface of the vehicle.
4. • FIRST EVER SOLAR CAR
The first model of solar car invented was a tiny 15-inch vehicle created by General
Motors employee, William G. Cobb. Designated the Sun mobile, he displayed it in 1955 at
the Chicago, Powerama convention.
5. WORKING PRINCIPLE OF SOLAR CAR
• The exposed part of the vehicles have solar arrays which convert solar energy from the
sun to usable electrical energy
• PV cells are placed together to form modules which in turn are placed together to form
an array, large arrays in use can produce over 12 kw of power.
7. • COMPONENTS OF SOLAR CAR
•Solar Array
•Power Tracker
•Battery
•Electric Motor
•Speed Controller
•Chassis
•Wheel
8. • SOLAR ARRAY
A large number of solar cells are wired together to form a solar array. It collects
the Sun radiation and converts into the electrical energy which is further used
to drive the solar vehicle.
9. • POWER
TRACKER
Power trackers, which convert solar array voltages to the system voltage, are important in solar car.
•Battery
The batteries store energy from the solar array through power tracker and makes them available for the motor's
available for the motor's use.
10. • MOTORS
• Converts the electric energy to mechanical energy that helps in moving the vehicles.
• DC brush permanent magnet motors are mostly used to drive the solar cars. As they are
inexpensive and easy to install. In this we can expect a maximum efficiency of 80-90%.
11. • SPEED CONTROLLER
Purpose of motor speed controller is to take the signal representing the demanded
speed and to drive the motor at that speed. The controller may or may not measure the
speed of the motor.
• Chassis
The outer framework on which the entire structure of the car sets upon.
• Wheel
Helps in controlling the direction and speed of the vehicle.
12. • APPLICATIONS
• This concept can be utilized to build a single sitter four wheel vehicles
in practice.
• It can be extended to more commercial form of four wheeler vehicles.
• in industry where small vehicles are used to perform light weight
conveys work from one place to other place.
• It can be used places where, fuel based vehicles are banned due to
production of pollution and noise.
13. • ADVANTAGES
1. Eco-friendly and Quiet
2. Energy Availability
3. No Fuel Costs
4. Driving Comfort
• DISADVANTAGES
1. Design Challenge
2. Poor Practicality
3. Maintenance Cost
4. Energy Storage Capacity
14. CONCLUSION
• Solar car would be an amazing advancement in future car technology.
• They would allow free and pollution less with ultimate accessibility.
• If some minor drawback associated with solar car can be rectified,
then for sure solar car will play a vital role in future transportation.
