Task 2
1. Photorealism
Photorealism is an
artistic style in which
an artist attempts to
create a painting so
precise and exactly
accurate that, on
first glance, it can be
mistaken for a
photograph. Many
artists could do such
a good job that even on second and third glance their works
could be mistaken for actual photographs. This is used in Tomb
Raider to make the game look better and when you play
through the game it emerges you into the game a lot more than
a game that doesn’t use photorealism.
Cel Shading
Cel shading is a
new popular form
of graphics arts.
Cel shading has
been used for
animation field
before it was
introduced into the
video game world. A lot of modern day Japanese animation is
cel shaded at one point. There are 2 main advantages to
this and they are that you get better FPS and if you
want to make a game look like a cartoon rather than
realistic this is what they use.
2. Abstraction
Abstraction is the act of
considering something as a
general quality or
characteristic, apart from
concrete realities, specific
objects, and actual
instances. This is good to
use for simple games like
space invaders etc.
Exaggeration
Exaggeration is used in games to make things look bigger and
better than they actually are also it helps to give a more
emerging experience. Exaggeration in games reflect elements
of expressionism, theatre acting and animation and are
readapted into the game culture, the freedom to assume any
3. form; freedom from ossification. Halo 4 uses exaggeration to
give the user a more immersive playing experience.
