SUCCESS FROM THE HANDS OF MOTHERS
SURYA flour mill is a kudumbasree small business unit run by 5
power full ladies. Which is locatedin Ernakulamdistrict at
udayamperoorgramapanchayat.These five ladies are
housewife’s a part from their home duty they earn a small
amount as their wage, which they can spend in their own needs
rather than begging from their husbands. Now this business
unit has become an excellent role model for women
entrepreneurs across Kerala.
BACK GROUND FOR STARTING THE BUSINESS
 The ultimateaim behindkudumbasree project is to make
women more powerful in the society and self reliant in
dailylife.
 In 2011 Ernakulam kudumbasree mission and
udayamperoorpanchayathas decided to introduce a new
venture for kudumbasree members.
 5 members of asraya kudumbasree decided to group
together and start flour mill business and decided to give it
a name called‘surya flour mill’.
 Ernakulamkudumbasree mission and udayamperoor
gramapanchayatalong with SBT mulanthuruthybranch
provide adequatefunds for staring the venture.
 Their ultimateaim behind starting the businesswas to
improve the financialperformance of their families.
PERSONAL DETAILS OF THE BUSINESS
 SURYA FLOUR MILL is a small business unit under the
kudumbasree project of Ernakulamdistrict kudumbasree
mission and udayamperoorgramapanchayat.This business
unit got formed by grouping of 5 ladieswho are
kudumbasree members .Surya flour mill reach the
consumers by providingflour mill facility and fresh flour
and curry powders , which are prepared from their own
hands, naturally. These 5 members will work on shift
basics of about 4 hours in a day, for that they will make a
shift of 2/3 members.
LOCATION OF THE BUSINESS
The flour mill is located at udayamperoorgramapanchayat
which is at Ernakulumdistrict.
Ultimately business is located at remote area, which is far
away from city life.
AREA AND LAYOUT OF THE SHOP
Area and surroundings of business will decide lot about the
future of the business firm. Because the business shouldbe
located at a place where consumers can easily access it.
Some business concern may get assistance in electricity and
in case of tax too if it is located at a place which is remote
area in any village.
The concern is located at udayamperoorgramapanchayat
and they are conducting their business in a shop which
they have taken as lease.
That shop is the property of coir society which is a
government concern.
MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN DAY TODAY
ACTIVITIES
Each member is allocatedwith adequate responsibilitiesand
duties in day to day operations.Because surya flour is a food
processing industry so in dailybasis they need to make each
item clean in terms washing, to make it raw under the sunlight
.Hence they are offering flour mill facility for that they need to
be alert and maintainbest knowledge in their practical
experience. Each member also needsto maintaingood
communicationand personal relationshipbetween the
consumers. Hence each member needs to maintaincleanness
in theirbody.
PRODUCTS AND PRICING STARATEGIES
Products are the finished goods of the business concern
prepared for the consumption of consumers. Every product
should be created and prepared according to satisfaction of
the consumers. A product should be anythingwhich satisfy
the needs and wants of the consumers.

Fresh crushed chilly

RAW MATERIALS
Raw material is anything that a businessconverts into
finished products. Each raw material should be fresh and
qualityfull so that it will reach according to the satisfaction
of the consumer.
Main raw materialsincludes raw rice , wheat , coriander
seeds , raw chilly,raw turmeric etc

Electricity
Water
Packing cover
VOLUME OF PROFIT AND COST INCURRED
The ultimateaim of businessis to earn profit. Here also
surya flour mill is aim to earn maximum profit which will
minimize their cost of production and other expenditure.
Volume of profit
When we consider their profit in monthly terms they are
having profit of above RS-35000/- , if there is no any other
critical financialcrisis. Here we can assume that surya flour
is having maximum RS-5000/- as savings in each month.
Cost incurred
When we consider about their cost of productionin
monthly terms they are having RS-25000/- only for
purchase of raw materials, except other additional
expenses. Other expenditure includes rent of RS-500/- ,
electricity bill, wages to the members, repairs of the
machinery etc.
EMPLOYER PROFILE AND NO: OF EMPLOYEES
Hence this is a Kudumbasree/SHG business initiative.So in
this business there is no particularemployer .Each
member is treated equally,from this group one will act as
a president and one will be a secretary .Surya flour mill
consist of 5 members who are running successfully this
business. Each member is getting RS-60/- for 4 hours shift
and variousfestive bonuses are also distributed.
MAIN CUSTOMERS AND THEIR SATISFACTION
Main customers of this business are local people who are
nearby located to the business.
Other kudumbasree units and customers under home
shop scheme.
Outside consumers who will also became main consumers
by getting adequateknowledge from the regular users.
SATISFACTION
Consumers are fully satisfied because they are
getting fresh and quality product at reasonable
price. Without any artificial chemicalsand
preservatives.
SUPPLIERS AND FINANCING AUTHORITIES
Suppliersare the persons who supply adequateraw
materialsand funds to the business concerns. As a good
reputed kudumbasree business concern suppliersare
ready to supply materialson credit basis too without
making any shortage in supply.

Surya flour mill got its all financialhelpfrom the
responsible authorities of kudumbasree project. The
authorities who give maximum help are mentionedbelow.

Loan from SBT
Kudumbasree district mission has provided RS 50,000/- as
subsidy along with RS 15,000/- as revolving fund for
conducting business.
Udayamperoorpanchayathad also providedRS 1000, 00/-
for purchasing machinery and other assets.
Surya flour mill has also taken loanfrom SBT mulanthuruthy
branch for an amount of RS 1000, 00/- and also another loan
from SBT udayamperoorbranch for an amount RS 1000, 00/-
.
REPORTING AUTHORITIES
Surya flour is responsible with the kudumbasree officialsat
the district level and at udayamperoorpanchayatlevel such
as cds. These responsible officialswill overview the
performance of the surya flour mill and give proper guidance
at necessary time.
COMPETITION PROFILE AND PRICE COMPARISION WITH OTHER
PRODUCTS
Hence consumer is treated as king so that he has the right
of choice to select the best products that he need. For this
business concerns need to be part of competition, for
winning in the competition business concerns should be
more careful in their operations.

Price is the one of the important factor in marketing mix
and it should be decided carefully. Then only we will get
the best price for their products.
They are charging a price which is 2 times lower than the
famous brands which are existed at the market.
MAINTENANCEOF BOOKS OF ACCOUNTS
Books of accountsare daily maintainedfor evaluatingthe
financialperformance of the concern. For this dailyoccurring
sales and expenses are recorded in the books of accounts by
the secretary and this account are presented in front of the
members weekly at kudumbasree meetings. Annual auditing
works are done by the kudumbasree district mission during
the months march- April.
STRATEGIES USED TO DIFFERTIATE WITH OTHERS
Strategy is anythingwhich will differentiate a business
concern from another business concerns. By adoptinga best
strategy which will ultimatelylead to increase in the sales
volume of the products.
Fresh grains are crushed and naturallypacked in front of
the customers.
They give more importance to qualityrather than color
and layout of the cover packing.
No artificialcolors and preservatives are addedto the
products.
No offers and discounts are issued.
INVENTORYMANAGEMENTAND ADVERTISEMENTS
Surya flour is concentrating their business mainlyin food
processing, so over stocking may lead to health hazards,
because here they are not using any artificialpreservatives or
chemicalsin the food items.
Inventories are stored at their own shop in variousshelf
and wardrobe. Lot of stocks is not stored by them,
because they are only keeping stocks weekly basics.
Advertisements are the huge money needed marketing
strategy used commonly by the business concerns. But here
SURYA FLOUR MILLS is not using any major advertisements
for increasing their sales volume.
No advertisementsare used by them. Theirmain
marketing strategy is their flour mills itself and other
kudumbasree units and local people.
CONCLUSION
After conducting this study entitled ‘’business
familiarizationstudy’’ we can see that one another success
women entrepreneurship in Kerala. Surya flour mill is on
its way to become a better role model for the entire
women in Kerala. These ladies were basicallyhouse wife’s
who were only at their home, but when they given an
opportunitythey had lightened the candleof success. This
study had helped me to get more familiarizedwith the
business and its operations.

  • 2. SUCCESS FROM THE HANDS OF MOTHERS SURYA flour mill is a kudumbasree small business unit run by 5 power full ladies. Which is locatedin Ernakulamdistrict at udayamperoorgramapanchayat.These five ladies are housewife’s a part from their home duty they earn a small amount as their wage, which they can spend in their own needs rather than begging from their husbands. Now this business unit has become an excellent role model for women entrepreneurs across Kerala.

BACK GROUND FOR STARTING THE BUSINESS  The ultimateaim behindkudumbasree project is to make women more powerful in the society and self reliant in dailylife.  In 2011 Ernakulam kudumbasree mission and udayamperoorpanchayathas decided to introduce a new venture for kudumbasree members.  5 members of asraya kudumbasree decided to group together and start flour mill business and decided to give it a name called‘surya flour mill’.  Ernakulamkudumbasree mission and udayamperoor gramapanchayatalong with SBT mulanthuruthybranch provide adequatefunds for staring the venture.  Their ultimateaim behind starting the businesswas to improve the financialperformance of their families.

PERSONAL DETAILS OF THE BUSINESS  SURYA FLOUR MILL is a small business unit under the kudumbasree project of Ernakulamdistrict kudumbasree mission and udayamperoorgramapanchayat.This business unit got formed by grouping of 5 ladieswho are kudumbasree members .Surya flour mill reach the consumers by providingflour mill facility and fresh flour and curry powders , which are prepared from their own hands, naturally. These 5 members will work on shift basics of about 4 hours in a day, for that they will make a shift of 2/3 members.
  • 5. LOCATION OF THE BUSINESS The flour mill is located at udayamperoorgramapanchayat which is at Ernakulumdistrict. Ultimately business is located at remote area, which is far away from city life.
  • 6. AREA AND LAYOUT OF THE SHOP Area and surroundings of business will decide lot about the future of the business firm. Because the business shouldbe located at a place where consumers can easily access it. Some business concern may get assistance in electricity and in case of tax too if it is located at a place which is remote area in any village. The concern is located at udayamperoorgramapanchayat and they are conducting their business in a shop which they have taken as lease. That shop is the property of coir society which is a government concern. MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN DAY TODAY ACTIVITIES Each member is allocatedwith adequate responsibilitiesand duties in day to day operations.Because surya flour is a food processing industry so in dailybasis they need to make each item clean in terms washing, to make it raw under the sunlight .Hence they are offering flour mill facility for that they need to be alert and maintainbest knowledge in their practical experience. Here also surya flour mill is aim to earn maximum profit which will minimize their cost of production and other expenditure. Volume of profit When we consider their profit in monthly terms they are having profit of above RS-35000/- , if there is no any other critical financialcrisis. Here we can assume that surya flour is having maximum RS-5000/- as savings in each month. Cost incurred When we consider about their cost of productionin monthly terms they are having RS-25000/- only for purchase of raw materials, except other additional expenses. Other expenditure includes rent of RS-500/- , electricity bill, wages to the members, repairs of the machinery etc.

EMPLOYER PROFILE AND NO: OF EMPLOYEES Hence this is a Kudumbasree/SHG business initiative.So in this business there is no particularemployer .Each member is treated equally,from this group one will act as a president and one will be a secretary .Surya flour mill consist of 5 members who are running successfully this business. Each member is getting RS-60/- for 4 hours shift and variousfestive bonuses are also distributed. MAIN CUSTOMERS AND THEIR SATISFACTION Main customers of this business are local people who are nearby located to the business. Other kudumbasree units and customers under home shop scheme. Outside consumers who will also became main consumers by getting adequateknowledge from the regular users.
  • 12. SATISFACTION Consumers are fully satisfied because they are getting fresh and quality product at reasonable price. Without any artificial chemicalsand preservatives. As a good reputed kudumbasree business concern suppliersare ready to supply materialson credit basis too without making any shortage in supply. Udayamperoorpanchayathad also providedRS 1000, 00/- for purchasing machinery and other assets. Surya flour mill has also taken loanfrom SBT mulanthuruthy branch for an amount of RS 1000, 00/- and also another loan from SBT udayamperoorbranch for an amount RS 1000, 00/- . For this dailyoccurring sales and expenses are recorded in the books of accounts by the secretary and this account are presented in front of the members weekly at kudumbasree meetings. Annual auditing works are done by the kudumbasree district mission during the months march- April.

By adoptinga best strategy which will ultimatelylead to increase in the sales volume of the products. Fresh grains are crushed and naturallypacked in front of the customers. They give more importance to qualityrather than color and layout of the cover packing. No artificialcolors and preservatives are addedto the products. No offers and discounts are issued.
  • 17. INVENTORYMANAGEMENTAND ADVERTISEMENTS Surya flour is concentrating their business mainlyin food processing, so over stocking may lead to health hazards, because here they are not using any artificialpreservatives or chemicalsin the food items.
  • 18. Inventories are stored at their own shop in variousshelf and wardrobe. Lot of stocks is not stored by them, because they are only keeping stocks weekly basics. Advertisements are the huge money needed marketing strategy used commonly by the business concerns. But here SURYA FLOUR MILLS is not using any major advertisements for increasing their sales volume. No advertisementsare used by them. Theirmain marketing strategy is their flour mills itself and other kudumbasree units and local people.
  • 19. CONCLUSION After conducting this study entitled ‘’business familiarizationstudy’’ we can see that one another success women entrepreneurship in Kerala. Surya flour mill is on its way to become a better role model for the entire women in Kerala. These ladies were basicallyhouse wife’s who were only at their home, but when they given an opportunitythey had lightened the candleof success. This study had helped me to get more familiarizedwith the business and its operations.
