3. SUNDARBANS
 The Sundarbans is a cluster of low-lying islands in the Bay of Bengal,
spread across India and Bangladesh, famous for its unique
mangrove forests
 It’s a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of
the Padma, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengl.

4. LOCATION
 Sundarbans covers an area of 10,000 km2 of
which about 6000 km2 in Bangladesh and 4000
km2 in West Bengal, India.
 It is the homeland of world famous Royal
Bengal tiger
 In 1997 , UNESCO declared it as a world
heritage sight.

 SAVIOUR - It’s a natural guardian to save West Bengal
and Bangladesh from natural calamities. The largest
mangrove forest protects us from coastal erosion,
tsunami and surge storm.

 TOURISM –
Sundarbans is a famous tourism spot also. Sundarbans
National Park, Kotka beach, Hiron point, Dublar Char are
famous tourist zones in Sundarbans.
Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project -
The Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project in the Sundarban
has, of late, emerged as an important tourist destination of
the Sundarbans. This is the only crocodile project in West
Bengal

9. IMPORTANCE OF SUNDARBANS
 ECONOMY - Two third of the populations are engaged with
Agriculture. Most of the people of the southern region depend
on the Sundarbans directly or indirectly for their
livelihoods. The fisheries sector contributes 3-5% of GDP

 5700 species of Vascular Plants.
 250 types of Fishes.
 300 species of Birds .
 840 species of mammals are available in
this Mangrove forest.
 Sundarbans forest is named after
“Sundari” plant .

11. CAUSE OF SEA LEVEL RISE ON SUNDARBAN
 Ice melt is causing around two-thirds of global
sea level rise.
 Thermal expansion is responsible for about
global sea level rise. As the ocean gets
year, it expands, raising the sea level.
 Sinking lands are also responsible for this
Bay of Bengal.

12. DIRECT IMPACT ON SUNDARBAN
 Stimulate flooding
 Before 2100 the Lands of Sundarbans would be
reduced to 7% due to 88 cm sea level rise .CEGIS

 Biodiversity loss , great impact on ecosystem,

storms surges, cyclone etc.

Carbon Emission , Deforestation, Changing land forms ,
constructing big projects on coastal area, making
pollution so much etc.
 NATURAL CAUSE
Land erosion, cyclone attack in every year , etc

 Decrease carbon emission per capita as soon
as possible.
 Don’t intervene in Mangrove forest area in
the name of development.
 Don’t built any massive infrastructure in the
name of defence security in the new born
island.
 Don’t mine any form of fossil fuel like coal
 We have to stop poaching and deforestation.

20. MOVEMENT ON “SAVE SUNDARBAN” CAMPAIGN
 For the first time in history, Bangladesh is experiencing
a mass movement to save a forest – the largest
mangrove in the world.
 The government of Bangladesh and India are going to
build a 1320 MW coal fired power plant in Rampal,
besides Passur river, just 14 km away from the
Sundarbans.
