Bottled water is treated to reduce contaminants and render it fit for human consumption. It is then packaged in food grade containers such as
polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene, glass bottles, aluminum cans, tetra pack, etc., and is termed as bottled water. Bottled water can be
segmented into several categories, like:
Still bottled water: Normal clean and safe drinking water packaged in food grade containers.
Carbonated bottled water: Carbonated water is prepared by infusion of carbon dioxide under pressure to produce carbonic acid intended to
neutralize the acidity and adding taste to the water packaged in food grade containers.
Flavored bottled water: Water containing natural or artificial food grade flavors, sugars and sweeteners packaged in food grade containers.
Functional bottled water: Water containing food grade additives such as vitamins, minerals, acids, herbs, raw fruit extracts, etc., that add extra
nutritional value to the plain water.

origin, by distribution channel, by region and by company. Removing the outlier responses, the geometric mean of growth estimates and product
wise revenue shares generated across various segments were considered, to arrive at the final revenue shares. Revenue shares generated across
various segments were further triangulated from other stakeholders depending upon the type of bottled water.

Methodology Followed for Calculation of Market Shares:
• Market shares by product type, by packaging material, by pack size, by origin, by distribution channel, by region and by company were calculated
based on the responses received through primary surveys with industry experts, in which the respondents were asked about the market shares or
revenue generated from various types of bottled water. The final shares were calculated by taking the geometric mean of the responses gathered
from key opinion leaders after eliminating the outliers.

investment of USD56 million, to capitalize on the growing domestic and export demand.
“A rise in demand for bottled water has been observed during the pandemic, especially for the bottled drinking water as people were taking more care
of their health and avoiding any situation that might make them unwell. Also, during the initial days of pandemic, sales rose due to panic buying, which
created short term spike in demand. In addition, companies operating in the bottled water industry have been largely focusing on new product lines
such as functional water, flavored water, etc. This rising trend for new product lines apart firm normal drinking water would continue to prevail during the

The plant, which is located on 14 hectares, involved an investment of USD56 million, to capitalize on the growing domestic and export demand. “A rise in demand for bottled water has been observed during the pandemic, especially for the bottled drinking water as people were taking more care of their health and avoiding any situation that might make them unwell. Also, during the initial days of pandemic, sales rose due to panic buying, which created short term spike in demand.
