Editor's Notes
Emptoris has significant experience across multiple industries including Consumer Products, Financial Services, Telecommunications, and Industrial Manufacturing. Emptoris has over 330 Global 1000 customers, including GlaxoSmithKline and Motorola. Emptoris solutions create significant value for businesses across their supply chain, especially in helping businesses realize significant cost savings from automating and streamlining their procure-to-pay processes. For example, Emptoris helped Anglo American, one of the world’s largest mining companies, save over $1B dollars over a few year period by gather supplier data and analyzing enterprise spend to optimize supply decisions.
IBM sees strategic supply management has a critical part of the commerce lifecycle. How a business manages its supply chain can have a significant impact on a business’ customer experience as well as bottom and top line performance. In world where most businesses are more reliant than ever on a diverse global supply chain, close management of the supply chain is essential to prevent disruptions that impact your customers as well as control costs in order to position competitive prices to customer that drive revenue and improve margins. In fact, according to research 50% of the value (and costs!) a business’ products and services are in the hands the hands of suppliers. There is no doubt the impact your suppliers have on what you offer your customers and a what price. Hence, commerce starts with ensuring you have the right supply at the right cost to serve your customers.
With this acquisition, IBM extends its presence in the “buy” processes of Smarter Commerce, processes which work to optimize the sourcing, control, and procurement of goods and services. Today’s businesses increasingly need better supplier management, spend analysis and contract management solutions to lower sourcing costs and help meet growing customer expectations of supply chain effectiveness. Emptoris delivers these benefits by automating supplier selection, negotiation, management and compliance to reduce operational and capital costs while helping business better manage risk and growth in their supply chain.Let’s take a look at the key solution areas of the Emptoris portfolio and the value these solutions add the Smarter Commerce lifecycle.
Spend analysis is at the heart of the strategic supply management capabilities Emptoris brings to Smarter Commerce. Spend analysis is focused on increasing visibility into corporate spend via data gathering and proactively analyzing spend information via various dashboard and reporting views. This analysis helps a business prioritize sourcing needs and pipelines to drive downstream sourcing processes.Advanced analytics capabilities gathers and prepares the data for users to analyze. The data analysis function uses knowledge from external sources like Equifax and a considerable amount of spend data extracted from a business’ internal systems, such as ERP systems, and applies rules to categorize and analyze the data. The rules engine is equipped with over 20 thousand rules to analyze the data. Further, each customer can create their own rules.
The next capabilities in Strategic Supply Management are Category Spend Management tools that manage spend analysis for special supply categories of telecom expense management and professional services procurement management. These are specific solutions available now in the Smarter Commerce Buy portfolio to manage these specific supply expenses. Telecom expense management is a tool for controlling telecommunications spend through expense validation and service ordering. For validating expenses, the tool reads telecommunications usage and records from a variety of sources and extracts from these records the specific data associated with the ordered services and devices. In this way the tool can highlight poorly performing and over used accounts as well as incorrect charges. The tool uses a knowledge base of “meta” data that knows what the various fields in a billing record mean (including their classification) and how to analyze the various fields. The solution also supports the ordering telecom services, such as data lines, voice and data service plans, and mobile devices. The tool provides the proper purchase forms for all of the major carriers and knows how to submit these forms to procure the desired services and devices The unique value in the “telecom expense management” tool is the knowledge it possesses about how to fetch usage records from as well as submit orders to from a wide variety of invoice, orderings and other sources and services. The next functional area under “Category Spend Management” is “services procurement” that manages the lifecycle of service spend including ordering services and reconciling service charges against time reports and other charge reporting vehicles.
Supplier Lifecycle Management gathers the supplier information from suppliers across your organization as well as different supply categories to use in analyzing supplier performance and manage supplier engagement. Supplier information onboarding invites suppliers to fill out questionnaires that describe their company (like the companies name, address, phone number, id & DUNS number, etc.), followed product descriptions (like product name, color, price, and availability, etc.), and then any legal terms and conditions associated with selling each product. Suppliers are invited to onboard data in one of two ways. First, a supplier can be explicitly invited via an e-mail, which contains a user name and password. With these credentials the supplier logs onto the Emptoris onboarding server to access the questionnaires. Secondly, a supplier can choose to “self register” with the Emptoris onboarding server. The supplier lifecycle management process assigns a “product classification” to each product and a “risk assessment” to each supplier. The classification ties a product to a specific “contract template”. From this template a contract can be created to purchase the corresponding product. This risk assessment assigned to each supplier is based on Emptoris previous experience with the supplier (historical data) and from data retrieved from external sources; like Equifax .The rend result is a database of supplier information that can be used across supply chain management processes.Once the data is gathered, a business can proactively evaluate suppliers and mitigate supplier by risk modeling capabilities that indentify risk scenarios. Further, capabilities are provided to define and manage remediation programs to bring suppliers to expected levels of compliance and performance with a tight integration between the Supplier Development and Supplier Qualification, Supplier Evaluation and Supplier Risk capabilities and processes. …
Sourcing manages the lifecycle of awarding business to a suppliers including engaging with suppliers to request information through RFIs and RFQs, onboarding the data received, and selecting a supplier based on a given set of user defined criteria. The process also supports different types* of auctions to engage with suppliers. The sourcing process is simplified through user tools such as Step-by-step wizards that guide users through RFx creation. The unique aspect of our sourcing solution is supplier selection logic that uses the IBM CPLEX optimization engine to optimally select which supplier best satisfies the selection criteria constraints defined by the user. The sourcing optimization engine extracts supplier and product information, such as KIP data and proposed costs, and analyzes this data to select the optimal suppliers. Further, a user can run multiple “what-if” scenarios using different constraints to determine the best supplier understand certain conditions. Once a supplier is selected, the corresponding product and supplier data can be automatically sent to contract management for further processing. *Sourcing also supports four varieties of auctions. Users can auction goods to suppliers. Suppliers can auction goods to users. And each may allow the bids to be either open (visible to all bidders) or hidden.
The new Smarter Commerce contract management solution enables a business to create a contract to purchase a product from the supplier selected in sourcing process. Recall that the activities in the “sourcing” module selected the optimal supplier for a given product. The classification given to that product is used here by contract management to select the correct “purchase contract template” for purchasing the product. Contract management automatically populates the “contract template” with the supplier data gathered during other supply chain management processes including sourcing. Once the contract is filled out, it’s either mailed to the purchase approver or the purchase approver may choose to log onto contract management web site with a browser to view, edit and approve the contract. A contract may also require one or more rounds of negotiation with the product supplier. The Contract Management process handles the versioning of the contract, the check-ins and check-outs, audit trails of who changed what, and access privileges. Once a contract is approved the corresponding product can be initiated for purchase and this action sends a message to the proper ERP system to put in action the ordering of the product.
