Narcotic analgesics provide relief from moderate to severe pain and include opiates and opioids. Non-narcotic analgesics like aspirin and paracetamol are commonly used to relieve skeletal pain caused by conditions like arthritis by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis and reducing inflammation. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid used for pain relief and anesthesia that is also taken recreationally sometimes mixed with other drugs. It is synthesized from 1-benzylpiperidin-4-one condensed with aniline to form a Schiff base. Methadone is a synthetic opioid used for chronic pain and opioid dependence treatment. Mefenamic acid is also discussed but its synthesis is not described.

2. Narcotic Analgesics
 Narcotic analgesics are a class of medicines that are
used to provide relief from moderate-to-severe
acute or chronic pain. They may also be called
opiates, opioid analgesics, or narcotics. Analgesic is
another name for a medicine that relieves pain.

3. Non-narcotic analgesics
 This type of drug is generally used for relieving the
skeleton pain which can happen due to arthritis.
Aspirin and paracetamol are the most common drugs
in this case. When you take aspirin, it acts by
inhibiting the synthesis of the chemical known as
prostaglandins by chemical reactions which causes
inflammation in the tissues and as a result the
sensation of pain is felt.

5. Fentanyl
Fentanyl, also spelled fentanil, is a powerful opioid used as a pain
medication and, together with other medications, for anesthesia.
It is also used as a recreational drug, sometimes mixed with heroin
cocaine, benzodiazepine or methamphetamine.

The synthesis of fentanyl is accomplished beginning with 1-
benzylpiperidin-4-one which is condensed with aniline to form the
corresponding Schiff base

Methadone, sold under the brand names Dolophine and Methadose among
others, is a synthetic opioid agonist used for chronic pain and also for opioid
dependence.
It is used to treat chronic pain, and it is also used to treat addiction
to heroin or other opioids.
