The presentation discusses a 5-speed gearbox mechanism. It begins by providing background on the history of multi-speed gearboxes, noting that 5-speed transmissions became widespread in the 1980s. It then describes the main components and gearing arrangements in a 5-speed manual transmission. Finally, it explains an automated manual transmission (AMT) system and its advantages over a traditional manual transmission.

3. This Project is totally based on 5 Speed gear box mechanism.
Up until the late 1970s, most transmissions had three or four
forward gear ratios.
The First 5 Speed Gear Box Mechanism were Occasionally used in
Sports Cars Such as the 1966 Ferrari-166 Inter and the 1953 Alfa
Romeo 1900 Super Sprint.
Five Speed Gear box Mechanism became Widespread during the
1980s,as did the use of synchromesh on all forward gears.
The Main Aim of Five Speed gear box mechanism is to Provide
better Fuel economy and better performance.
4. The first Gear box
mechanism was invented in
1921 by a Canadian steam
engineer “Alfred Horner
Munro.
Alfred Munro designed his
device to use compressed air
rather than hydraulic fluid
so it lacked power and never
became sold commercially.
General motors then
developed in 1930 and
introduced in 1940.
The 1948 Oldsmobile was
the first model to use the
gear box mechanisms.
5. A Gear Box is a Mechanical Component used to change the
speed(RPM) and Increase the motor’s Torque.
The Input Shaft Connects to the engine on one side , and the gearbox
on the other side
Gear boxes can modify their speed , torque to convert the energy into
a compatible format.
The Gear box is also known as “transmission”.
A gear box consists of gears of varying sizes , because of the different
demands in times of the torque needed at the depending upon the
road and load.
The gear boxes are used in automobiles , turbines and heavy
machinery.
6. The 5 Speed Gearbox , Aims To
present the mechanism of a
gearbox. Gears of different sizes
are placed on three different
shafts . The gears on the shaft are
located at a specific distance from
each other . the top most shaft is
driven with the help of a motor
7. The Arrangement of gears as
follows
{ Note: Numbers 1-1 Indicates
SHAFT 1 – GEAR 1}
In 1st Gear – Gear 1-1 would
mesh with gear 2-3 and gear 2-5
would mesh with gear 3-5.
In 2nd Gear – Gear 1-2 would
mesh with gear 2-3 and gear 2-4
would mesh with gear 3-4.
In 3rd Gear – Gear 1-3 would
mesh with gear 2-3 and gear 2-3
would mesh with gear 3-3
In 4th Gear – Gear 1-4 would
mesh with gear 2-3 and gear 2-2
would mesh with gear 3-2.
In 5th Gear – Gear 1-5 would
mesh with gear 2-3 and gear 2-1
would mesh with gear 3-1
8. The 5 Speed Gear box, aims to present the mechanism of a gearbox. Gears of
different Sizes are placed on three different shafts. The gears on the shaft are
located at a specific distance from each other. The top most shaft is driven with the
help of a motor.
The Fixed and free gears can be mounted on either input or output of shaft or
both.
For example, a five-speed transmission might have the first-to-second selectors on
the countershaft, but the third-to-fourth selector and the fifth selector on the main
shaft.
This means that when the vehicle is stopped and idling in neutral with the clutch
engaged and the input shaft Spinning, the third,Fourth and Fifth Gear pairs do
not rotate.
9. The Manual transmission is synchronized in all forward gears for smooth
operation.
It has a lockout so you cannot shift directly from fifth to reverse.
When shifting up or down , make sure you push the clutch pedal down all the way
, shift to the next gear , and let the pedal up gradually .
A 5-Speed Shiftable automatic transmission provides the ease of use offered by
an automatic transmission coupled with the sportiness and increased the fuel
economy offered by a manual transmission.
A shiftable automatic transmissions do not have a clutch in the sense of a manual
transmission.
10. AMT refers to “Automated Manual Transmission.
It is a type of semi-automatic transmission.
“Clutch less Manual Transmission” is another name for AMT
It is gaining rapid popularity among vehicle manufacturers and Customers. In
addition, this technology is also very convenient to use.
In India, It is introduced for the first time by MARUTI SUZUKI on their hatch
Celerio.
This AMT was developed and employed on Maruthi Celerio by the Magneti
Marelli.

12. In very simple terms, Automatic Manual Transmission is nothing but a
manual transmission. It operates without the need to operate the clutch pedal.
Instead, it employs an electro-mechanical clutch actuator that operates the clutch
as and when required.
There are two components of the AMT or Automatic Manual Transmission. The
electronic components and hydraulic components. Out of these two, the hydraulic
components are actuators.
They perform tasks such as engaging and disengaging of the clutch and gears.
Sometimes, they allow the driver to choose the gear of his choice. In such a case,
their only role is to give assistance. Generally, the designers club all the hydraulic
components together and mount them on the gearbox as a single unit.
13. In Automatic Manual
Transmission system,
Transmission Control
Unit (TCU) is the most
intelligent electronic
component.
It governs the operation of
this entire system. TCU takes
into account the current
driving
conditions, engine operating
condition and also the
requirements of the driver.
It then processes all the data
and engages the desired gear
accordingly.
14. ADVANTAGES OF USING AMT:
1. It is convenient to operate. Hence, it reduces driving stress considerably.
2. It improves the life of the clutch components.
3. Accurate gear shifts help to reduce fuel consumption by upto 5%.
4. Improved fuel economy leads to emission reduction.
Magneti Marelli, ZF, and Bosch are the leading manufacturers of the AMT or
Automated Manual Transmission system for various vehicular applications such
as cars and trucks. However, the manufacturers use custom names to make their
product stand out
15. Manual Transmission (MT):
The transmission in which the shifting of
gears is done by the driver.
The cost of the cars with manual
transmission is less
It does not require active cooling due to it
does not over heat.
The fuel efficiency of the manual
transmission is more.
It’s design is simple and less complex
Manual transmission is not easy to drive.
In manual , there are three pedals to
operate . These three pedals are clutch
,brakes , and acceleration.
It has a low resale value.
Automatic Transmission (AT) :
The transmission in which the shifting of
gears done by the car.
The cost of automatic transmission cars
is high.
It requires active cooling due to
overheating problem.
The fuel efficiency of the Automatic
transmission is less.
It’s design is more complex.
Automatic transmission is easy to drive.
In automatic, there are two pedals to
operate . These two pedals are of brake
and accelerator.
It has a high resale value.
