MARINE BIOME
DR. SURJYA KUMAR SAIKIA
DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY
VISVA-BHARATI
Objectives
1)To provide a description of marine aquatic
biome.
2)To know different principle characteristics,
types and nature of the marine ecosystems
AQUATIC BIOMES
What we know…
BASICALLY, WE HAVE 2 MAIN TYPES OF AQUATIC BIOMES
1. Marine water
2. Fresh water
The marine biome is an environment
characterized by the presence of salt water. It
is found in all of Earth's oceans and is the
largest biome in the world
Aphotic Zone
Photic Zone

Ecosystems
Shallow water, sunlight
can penetrate to the
bottom
Certain types of fish,
crustaceans, clams,
oysters, worms,
urchins, seaweed and
smaller organisms
At greater depths
where sunlight cannot
penetrate, organisms
can generate their own
light

Coral Reef
Ecosystems
Subtype of seafloor
ecosystem
Found only in warm
tropical waters and
at relatively shallow
depths
About one-quarter
of marine species
depend on coral
reefs for food,
shelter or both

Estuary
Ecosystems
Shallow, sheltered
area of a river mouth
where freshwater
intermingles with
saltwater as it enters
the sea
The organisms
inhabiting estuaries
are specially
adapted to these
distinct conditions;
hence, the diversity
of species tends to
be lower than in the
open ocean
Serve an important
function as
nurseries for many
types of fish and
shrimp

Ecosystems
A special type of estuary, as they also
consist of a transition zone between
land and sea

Characterized by
trees that tolerate a
saline environment,
whose roots systems
extend above the
water line to obtain
oxygen, presenting a

Host a wide diversity
of life, including
sponges, shrimp,
crabs, jellyfish, fish,

1. Intertidal zone
• - is where the ocean meets the land —
sometimes it is submerged and at other times
exposed, aswaves and tides come in and out
1.Pelagic zone
• -includes those waters further from the land,
basically the openocean

3. Benthic zone
- isthe area below the
pelagic zone,but does not
include the very deepest parts
of theocean

Abyssal zone

-Thewater inthis
region isvery cold
(around 3°C),highly
pressured, high in
oxygen content, but
lowin nutritional

What we have learnt…..
Marine Biome is actually a salt water system. There different
zones in marine ecosystems
A large biodiversity in Marine biome exist in photic zone
There are six major types of Marine Ecosystems, namely,
(i) Marine Open Ecosystem, (ii) Ocean Floor Ecosystem, (iii)
Coral Reef Ecosystem, (iv) Estuary Ecosystems, (v) Saltwater
Wetland Estuary Ecosystems and (vi) Mangrove Ecosystem
