Functions
• A language function refers to what students do
with language as they engage with content and
interact with others.
• Functions represent the active use of language for
a specific purpose.
• Students use language functions in order to
express ideas, communicate with others, and
show understanding of content in an academic
setting.
• Language function means the verb used in the
learning target, such as identify, analyze,
summarize, define, explain, conclude, justify,
compare, sort, and so on.

• When teachers ask students to write for a variety of
purposes and across different genres, students learn
language functions. According to Gibbons (1991), a
multitude of language functions for speaking occur in the
classroom each day, including the following:
Expressing likes and dislikes
Expressing obligation
Expressing position
Hypothesizing
Identifying
Inferring
Inquiring/Questioning
Planning and predicting
Refusing
Reporting
Sequencing

• Text structures refers to how
the information within text is
organized.
• This strategy helps students
to understand that a text
might present a main idea
and details; a cause and the
effects; and or different
views of a topic.
• Teaching students to
recognize common text
structures can help students
monitor their
comprehension.

• Teachers can use it with the whole class, small
groups, or individually.
• Helps the students to navigate the various
structures presented within nonfiction and fiction
text.
• Common text structure used by students helps
students to recognize these text structure while
reading.

How teachers can create and use
the text structure strategy ?
To create the text structure strategy teachers
should
Choose the assigned reading and introduce the
text to the students.
Introduce the idea that texts have organizational
patters called text structure
Introduce the following common text structures :
(a) description (b) sequence (c) problem and
solution (d) cause and effect and (e) compare and
contrast
Introduce and model using a graphic organizer to
chart the text structure.

Examine topic sentences that
clue the reader to a specific

Model the writing of a
