• Ascaris are nematodes which is round worm, the ascarsis lumbricoides are
the most common that affects the humans and causes ascariasis in humans.
• Symptoms increase as the number of worms increase and may include
shortness of breath and fever at the beginning of the disease .
• Other symptoms that follow are abdominal swelling and abdominal pain ,
children are most commonly affected
3. ENTRY OF THE ASCARIS WORMS IN TO
OUR BODY• Infection occurs by eating food or drink contaminated by ascaris worms from feces
• Ingestion of infective eggs from contaminated soil.
• Food or vegetables that are infected with ascaris are major routes of entry in to the
body.
• Can also be present in foods that are under cooked.
• The life cycle of the ascaris worm is that:
• Swallowed eggs first hatch into the intestine .
• The larvae moves through the blood stream in to the lungs , after maturing it returns
to the stomach and small intestine and lays eggs.
• The cycle continues while some eggs are excreted through the feces and the rest
flows the cycle.

5. Signs and symptoms
• Symptoms in the lungs :
• Coughing or gagging
• Vomiting roundworms
• Wheezing or shortness of breath
• In the intestine it causes:
• Nausea
Irregular stools
Stomach or abdominal pain
Weight loss
• Some people with large infestations may
experience other symptoms such as fatigue
and fever.
• A major infestation may cause extreme
discomfort.
• Can also cause bowel obstruction and
pancreatitis and a large invasion may cause
inflammation and blockages.

• Blood and stool samples are far more accurate way of detecting roundworms
.
• Abdominal x- rays can also be used to diagnose the disease. The extent of
the invasion by the roundworms in to your body can be determined by
endoscopy.
7. Treatment
• Usually treated with anti parasitic drugs usually refer to as de worming drugs.
• Medications involve
• Albendazole
• Mebendazole.
• In cases which has advanced to a high level the treatment required here is
surgery.
8. Prevention.
• It is best to practice proper hygiene .
• to wash foods and vegetables before you consume them.
• Ensure that all foods are cooked properly not half cooked.
• Boil water before drinking when you are visiting under developed countries.
• Improving access to toilets and proper disposal of feces .
• Washing your hands with soap .
