Shigellosis is an illness caused by Shigella bacteria that can be prevented by excluding food handlers diagnosed with or experiencing diarrhea from food operations, ensuring handwashing, controlling flies, and avoiding foods like salads, tuna, shrimp, macaroni, chicken and potato that are easily contaminated. Common symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramps and fever.
