2. Fungal infection
› Fungal infection can be discussed in three group
1. Dermatophytic Infection
2. Systemic Infection
3. Candidal infection
3. Fungal infection
› Dermatophytic Infection: - involves the skin, hair, nails.
› Systemic Infection: - Also called as Mycotic infection and
they are chronic and difficult to diagnose. This infection
is caused by eryptococcosis, aspergillosis,blastomycosis
etc.
› Candidal Infection: - caused by Candida albicans.
Candidiasis affects moist skin, mucous membrane and
may cause systemic infection
4. Antifungal agent
› An agent used to kill or inhibit the growth of common mycotic
infection at local and systemic level is called as Antifungal
agent.
› Ideal properties of Antifungal agent
 Should be fungicidal.
 Should be non staining and non irritating to the skin and free from
sanitation reactions.
 Should penetrate into hair, nails and layers of skin.
 Should have some antibacterial activity.
5. Antifungal agent - Griseofulvin
› An antibiotic is isolated from Penicillium griseofulvum.
› It selectively effective in Dermatophytic infections of skin, nails and
hair but is of no use in yeast infections or candidiasis.
› Orally effective but no use as local application
› It is taken by newly formed keratin of the skin, hair and nails
where it exerts it antifungal action.
› Contraindicated in liver disease and pregnancy.
6. Antifungal agent - Nystatin
› An antibiotic is isolated from Streptomyceus noursei.
› It is very effective in treatment of yeast such as candida.
› It has little effect on dermatophytes and bacteria.
› Nystatin is frequently used as a local preparation in the form of
powder, ointment or suppositories but it may be given parenterally.
› It is effective against aspergillus which may be present in some
otitis externa and for aspergillosis of lung.
7. Antifungal agent – Amphotericin - B
› This polyene antibiotic is isolated from
Streptomyceus nodosus.
› It is very effective in treatment of yeast infections.
› It may be used topically or by IV route.
8. Antifungal agent – other agent
› Compound Benzoic acid ointment BPC used for
Dermatophytic infection.
› Tolnaftate and Clotrimazole is used for skin and vaginal
infection.
› Candidicin and hamycin is used for candidal infection.
› Flucytocin is used for systemic infection.
