People with formally assigned roles who work
together to achieve the organization s goals.
Manager
The person responsible for accomplishing the
organization s goals, and who does so by managing
(planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and
controlling) the efforts of the organization s people.

organizational resources
effectively and efficiently for
reaching organizational goal.

Human Resource Management (HRM)
HRM is the process of designing and maintaining
organizational resources effectively and efficiently for
reaching organizational goal by ensuring maximum
utilization of human resources.
Management Process
The five basic functions-
1. Planning
2. Organizing
3. Staffing
4. Leading
5. Controlling
Human Resource Management (HRM)
The process of acquiring, training, appraising, and
compensating employees, and of attending to their
labor relations, health and safety, and fairness
concerns.
Human Resource Management (HRM) Functions-
* Conducting job analyses (determining the nature of each
employee s job)
* Planning labor needs and recruiting job candidates
* Selecting job candidates
* Orienting and training new employees
* Managing wages and salaries (compensating employees)
* Providing incentives and benefits
* Appraising performance
* Communicating (interviewing, counseling, disciplining)
* Training and developing managers
* Building employee commitment
Why is Human Resource Management important to all
managers?
AVOID PERSONNEL MISTAKES.
For example, no manager wants to:
* Hire the wrong person for the job
* Experience high turnover
* Have your people not doing their best
* Waste time with useless interviews
* Have your company taken to court because of your
discriminatory actions
* Have your company cited under federal occupational safety
laws for unsafe practices
* Have some employees think their salaries are unfair relative to
others in the
organization
* Allow a lack of training to undermine your departments
effectiveness
* Commit any unfair labor practices
IMPROVE PROFITS AND PERFORMANCE
Similarly, effective human resource management can help
ensure that you get results through people.
Remember that you can do everything else right as a manager
lay brilliant plans, draw clear organization charts, set up world-
class assembly lines, and use sophisticated accounting controls
but still fail, by hiring the wrong people or by not motivating
subordinates.
Illustrate the human resources responsibilities of line and
staff (HR) managers.
Authority
The right to make decisions, direct others work, and give
orders.
Line Authority
The authority exerted by an HR manager by directing the
activities of the people in his or her own department and in
service areas .
Staff Authority
Staff authority gives the manager the right (authority) to advise
other managers or employees.
Line Manager
A manager who is authorized to direct the work of
subordinates and is responsible for accomplishing the
organization s tasks.
Staff Manager
A manager who assists and advises line managers.
Functional Authority
The authority exerted by an HR manager as coordinator of
personnel activities.
Line Managers’ HRM Responsibilities
1. Placing the right person on the right job
2. Starting new employees in the organization (orientation)
3. Training employees for jobs that are new to them
4. Improving the job performance of each person
5. Gaining creative cooperation and developing smooth
working relationships
5. Interpreting the firm’s policies and procedures
7. Controlling labor costs
8. Developing the abilities of each person
9. Creating and maintaining department morale
10. Protecting employees’ health and physical condition
