Definition
 Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function
within an organization that focuses on the recruitment of,
management of, and providing direction for the people
who work in an organization.
Functions of HRM
 There are two types of functions of HRM as
follows :
 Managerial
 Operational
Managerial functions are as follows :
• Planning
• Organizing
• Directing
• Controlling
 Planning is necessary to give the organization its goals and directions to
establish best procedure to reach the goals. Planning staff levels requires that
an assessment of present and future needs of the organization be compared
with present resources and future predicted resources. Appropriate steps
then be planned to bring demand and supply into balance.
 Organization of the task is another important step. Task
is allocated to every member as per their skills and
activities are integrated towards a common goal.

Directing
The directing function of the personnel manager involves
encouraging people to work willingly and effectively for
the goals of the Organization.
Controlling
Post planning, organizing and directing, performance of
an employee is checked, verified and compared with
goals. If actual performance is found deviated from the
plan, control measures are taken

Importance of HRM
 Human Resource Management is important to all managers despite their
various functions because of the following reasons-
 Hire the right person for the job
 Low attrition rate
 Ensure people do their best
 Safety laws are not ignored
 Equity towards employee in relation to salary etc.
 Effective training
 Avoid unfair labor practices

 Human resources managers oversee the most important component
of a successful business — a productive, thriving workforce. The role
of human resource management in organizations is to organize
people so that they can effectively perform work activities. This
requires viewing people as human assets, not costs to the
organization. Looking at people as assets is part of contemporary
human resource management and human capital management.
Role of HR Manager
 There are three main roles of a HR Manager :
 Administrative Role
 Operational Role
 Strategic Role

 Housekeeper
 Counsellor
 Welfare officer

 The strategic role of HR management focuses attention on
how to enable ordinary employees to turn out extra ordinary
performance, taking care of their ever-changing
expectations.
 The Key areas of attention include effective management of
key resources (employees , technology, work process) while
delivering cost effective, solutions
 Change agent
 Strategic partner

  • 7.  Planning is necessary to give the organization its goals and directions to establish best procedure to reach the goals. Planning staff levels requires that an assessment of present and future needs of the organization be compared with present resources and future predicted resources. Appropriate steps then be planned to bring demand and supply into balance.  Organization of the task is another important step.
