PROFESSIONAL PROFILE
For many years I have worked as both a Ferry Master and in a dual capacity role as Master/ Engineer
with the State Transit Authority. Prior to this, I spent 3 years as a Deck Hand, and then completed 14
years on various tugs, dredges, and ferry companies. I gained a wealth of experience towing and
pushing marine craft to 1500 ton, from which I utilized the experience to gain my role as a Ferry
Master with State Transit Authority (NSW). Here I was employed for a period of 26 years, achieving
the highest ranked position of Senior Master.
I enjoy the responsibilities, team environment, and challenges that are associated with being a Ferry-
Tug Boat Master in a dual capacity role, I have trained, mentored and organized teams of up to 6
personnel, and enjoy the working relationships and bonds that are forged by working as a team.

State Transit Authority (STA) 1986-2012 Ferry
Master Class 4 - Master/ Engineer
I was employed by State Transit Authority (STA) for a period of over 26 years, and in that time I have
enjoyed a dual role as a Class 4 Ships Master & Master/ Engineer, as well as a Tug Boat Master
previously. I have been responsible at one time or another for all thirty three vessels in the fleet
various lengths between 30/65 meters, and most recent 9 years I held a senior position as Master
on board the Manly Ferries and Jet Cats.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Managed, trained, coached, mentored and organized teams of up to 6 personnel, ensuring
high quality safety on all voyages
Responsible for the safe and economical operation of the ferry in compliance with applicable
regulations
Effectively communicated with a range of stakeholders, including management and
passengers
Responsible for 150-1250 passengers per trip, depending on which vessel I was allocated for
the day
I worked the entire Sydney harbor on a range of vessels, from 1E and 1D class vessels
Start-up checks, operational checks, repairs and re-fuelling
Record keeping of log books & incident reports
Navigation daily of Australia’s busiest harbour

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Through-out my 26 year career with STA, and my previous employment history as Deckhand,
Coxswain Driver, and Master Engineer for various employers spanning 13 years, I have not had one
safety incident, despite being accountable for hundreds, or sometimes even thousands, of
passengers on multi- million dollar sophisticated vessels. I attribute this to my wealth of knowledge
and skills, and to the fact that my staff are aware of safety procedures through constant coaching and
training.
