Personal Profile and line of duties
A senior Master Mariner with extensive experience in ship / terminal / agency / operations.
Having worked last 14 years in a senior position with the 3rd largest container shipping operator
in the world. Work experience in France, Africa, and South East Asian super hubs. A team
player, always believe in educating the staff and gains much respect. Possess the ability to
communicate effectively and rapport at all levels particularly experienced in liaison with top
management, / ministry officials / external organizations.
Believes in being reliable, honest, adaptable, resourceful, thorough and very hard working.
Ability to think clearly and carefully when under pressure, lead by example and use analysis,
experience and common sense when planning, problem solving and decision making in the field
of work. Was earmarked to join P3 service (Maersk / MSC / CMA-CGM) to handle terminal
and vessel operations in Malaysia / Singapore by Mr. Farid Salem, CEO of CMA-CGM.
Conducted for Sri Lanka Port Authority - Mahapola Training Institute and Ceylon
Association Steam ship Agencies (CASA) of training courses for container , agency and
terminal operations under Ministry of Shipping into all aspects of ship / agency Agencies
container operations.
ILO / UNDP / ESCAP trained lecturer, conducted programs for senior managers in the
shipping field.
Gained extensive knowledge in Maritime Education and Safety Training by visiting
major maritime training institutes in North America / Europe etc.
Hands down experience in logistics operation in Europe, Africa, South East Asia, into
export / transshipment / import cargo and various issues relating to packaging, inland /
sea transport.
Extensive knowledge on packing goods into containers, cargo claims and handling.
Formulating KPI with terminal and shipping lines for quick turn around time, reducing
idle time and berth delays. Giving suggestions to terminal on expertise to improve.
Involved in setting up agencies, in Africa, Malaysia. Managing the vessel operations,
assisting transshipment and best feeder connections; container yard operations,
inspections / surveying, on dock operations, cargo / vessel claims;
2. Vessel Sharing Agreements with leading container operators such as (Maersk,
Evergreen, China Shipping Corporation, Hapag Lloyd, UASC etc.).
Educating agency as well as terminal operators on finer points on enhancing
productivity, claims handling, surveying , accident prevention motivating the staff.
Liaising with terminal with Boston Consultation Group on a study to improve
productivity, reducing ship turn around time.
Achievements
Growth of volumes for the company and increase of vessels in Port Klang (Malaysia)
from yearly 800,000 TEU in 2005 to 2.2 million TEUS in 2009.
Increase of services and vessels from 34 callers to 100 callers per month.
Setting up new agency in Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia) for JV services for handling USA
/ MED / Europe / Africa services with giant container carriers. Increase of volumes and
ship callers from 16 to 50 callers per month.
Shore Experience - Foreign
Over 14 years working as Terminal/ Vessel Operations in Africa, Malaysia and France
for third largest container operator in the world. Last 10 years working as Operations
Representative for CMA-CGM French container operator (3rd largest in the world) in
Malaysia.- Tanjung Pelepas and Port Klang which are number 17th and 14th within the top
twenty container ports in the world. 2001 - 2013
Shore Experience - Local
4 Years work experience in Colombo Sri Lanka for previous second largest container
operator in the world in an agency. Evergreen Shipping of Taiwan. 1996 - 2000
2 years working as Port Captain for 2nd largest Japanese Shipping Company. Ship
Management, Training on board crew on familiarization, ISM, ISO, ship board
operations, vessel visits, crew recruiting etc.1995 – 1996.
4 years working as senior lecturer in a University of Moratuwa, Shipping and Nautical
Division. 1991- 1994.
Sea Experience
Master Mariner with 5 years command experience on very large bulk carriers, container
ships, handy bulkers and general cargo ships. Became a ship captain at the age of 26
years being one of the youngest in the country.
Total sailing experience over 16 years.
Academic and Professional qualifications
Master of Science Degree (M.Sc) in Nautical Education, World Maritime University,
Malmo, Sweden 1991.
First Sri lankan to be honored with “ Fellow “ of “The Nautical Institute “ UK
Master Mariners Certificate 1984 (Commonwealth certified).
Followed Post Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law, London Metropolitan University.
Diploma in Loss Prevention - North of England UK.
BVQI Lead Auditor certification on ISO 2001 systems.
Examiner for Mates and Masters- Government of Sri Lanka.
Container Vessel Operations trainer – through Mahapola Training – Sri Lanka Port
