Profile (Optional)
• The first thing an employer will read when looking at your resume
• A summary of your resume, a brief introduction, and a preview of what’s to come
Checklist:
• No more than 5 lines for key competencies (4 for profile)
• Can include languages
• Does it clearly and convincingly summarize strengths/experiences/skills?
• Does it match the job posting (multiple references)?
• Does it provide a clear, convincing link to the rest of the resume (i.e. is there PROOF elsewhere in the
document?)
Education
• Bachelor of Commerce not BCOMM or B.Comm
• List expected date of completion (either as “Completion: …” or “Expected Completion: ...”)
• No laundry lists of courses: only specific, relevant courses
• Include key/relevant
projects and awards
• GPA – score/%/letter grade,

industry/company? Does it match the job
description?
Interests
Interests should:
• Show your personality
• Be memorable and
specific (your “zinger”)
• Be fun and appropriate

THIS WEEK WEEK 9 WEEK 10 • Tutorial: Resumes • What’s Due: Resume draft on Turnitin before tutorial • Tutorial: Cover letters and Networking • What’s Due: Cover Letter draft on Turnitin before tutorial • Tutorial: Informational Interviews • What’s Due: Resume and cover letter (final) on March 12th at 11:59pm on Turnitin • Networking event: March 13th 6-8pm in CPA hall COURSE TIMELINE: WHERE ARE WE AND WHAT’S COMING UP?
  • 5. LET’S BEGIN! Trade your resume with the person on your left when a new section starts Bring your pens out!
  • 7. BE CONSISTENT Font, font size, spacing, bullet points, alignment, punctuation, date & abbreviation format, hyphens vs dashes FIRST IMPRESSION Pick a colour scheme (if you want) and use white space wisely One page only PROOFREAD No grammar mistakes, typos, spelling errors Proofread Proofread Proofread FORMATTING: RESUMES & CLS 3RD PERSON Always speak in third person and maintain a professional tone; no slang or personal pronouns (he, she, we, I)

RESUME CHECKLIST • Titles formatted the same • Spacing is consistent • Margins are reasonable (≥1.5cm) • Phrases either ALL end in period or not • Dates • Usually right-aligned • All have month and year, or just year • All months are abbreviated to same # of letters • Uses hyphens (–) OR dashes (-) • Font: • Size is 10 • Generally no more than two types of font • Numbers under 10 are spelled out (i.e. two vs. 2) • Bullets: same size/style, aligned • One page (if you have a second page, must be relevant)

Profile (Optional) • The first thing an employer will read when looking at your resume • A summary of your resume, a brief introduction, and a preview of what’s to come Checklist: • No more than 5 lines for key competencies (4 for profile) • Can include languages • Does it clearly and convincingly summarize strengths/experiences/skills? • Does it match the job posting (multiple references)? • Does it provide a clear, convincing link to the rest of the resume (i.e. is there PROOF elsewhere in the document?)

Education • Bachelor of Commerce not BCOMM or B.Comm • List expected date of completion (either as “Completion: …” or “Expected Completion: ...”) • No laundry lists of courses: only specific, relevant courses • Include key/relevant projects and awards • GPA – score/%/letter grade, indicating the school scale • ’UBC Sauder School of Business’ ß correct naming
  • 15. Work Experience • Achievement based (qualitative or quantitative results) • Use industry language/jargon • 2-3 statements per job experience • Reverse chronological order
  • 16. Accomplishment Statements STAR RATS result, action, task, situation “Reduced expected deployment time by 10% by performing quality assurance on five email campaigns, reviewing test emails for strategic misalignment, and working closely with the director of production.”
  • 17. Accomplishment Statements STAR RATS result, action, task, situation • Eliminate filler words • Written in third person • Keep it to one sentence (2 lines is best) • The elements of the RATS statement should be apparent (but not necessarily in RATS order)
  • 18. Results (Skill verbs) ATTAINED DECREASED SAVED GENERATED EXCEEDED MAXIMIZED SURPASSED OPTIMIZED ELIMINATED MINIMIZED IMPROVED ESTABLISHED INCREASED REDUCED CREATED ENHANCED

What to look for: • Are experiences achievement based? • Do numbers clearly quantify achievements where appropriate? • Do statements have Accomplishment, Proof, Transferrable skills, and Scope of Action? • Are the result verbs varied and strong? • Does language indicate familiarity with industry/company? Does it match the job description?
  • 20. Interests Interests should: • Show your personality • Be memorable and specific (your “zinger”) • Be fun and appropriate *NOTE: Be able to speak about these interests extensively!
  • 21. What to look for: • Do the interests show personality? Are they specific? Are they relevant to the job (not always necessary)? • Do they differentiate the candidate? Are they memorable? • Be fun! And appropriate
  • 22. WHAT COUNTS AS AN ERROR? spelling & grammar incorrect information improper formatting missing information inconsistencies incorrect order **Not including a Job Posting counts as 2 errors **Please note errors are not limited to this
