Editor's Notes
PLEASE NOTE: UNIV 349 IS SPECIFIC TO FIRST YEAR TRANSFER STUDENTS AND THEREFORE ALWAYS HAS A FORMER TRANSFER STUDENT AS THE IN CLASS STUDENT MENTOR. THIS SLIDE PROVIDED THE STUDENTS WITH A VIEW AS TO WHAT TO EXPECT THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER AND FROM THE CLASS. THE TRANSFER EXPERIENCE ASSOCIATE FACILITATES A WEEKLY ACTIVITY WITH THE CLASS
An overview of the course:
Specific to first year transfer students
Supports students as they transition from a community college into a four-year university
Supports students as they navigate the culture of CSU Channel Islands to aid in a successful intellectual and social transition
UNIV 349 is an interdisciplinary seminar, students examine the contemporary global landscape and issues facing societies from a variety of perspectives
Students will develop critical thinking skills needed for analyses of problems while exploring solutions using the methodologies, tools, and techniques of academic disciplines
The seminar promotes the self-reflection through journal entries throughout the semester; prompts regarding the CI mission, an individual student’s degree program, and the social and intellectual life at the university are an example of required entries. Students are also encouraged to create entries about topics important to their educational journeys.
Students meet bi-weekly outside of the class in small groups made up of their peers bi-weekly
STUDENTS ARE APREHENSIVE WHEN IT COMES TO GROUP WORK. STUDENTS OFTEN WOULD EXPRESS FRUSTRATIONS WITH OTHER STUDENTS EITHER NOT CONTRIBUTING OR PRODUCING LESS THAN ACCEPTABLE WORK. UNIV 349 WAS A CLASS THAT HAD A HEAVY FOCUS ON GROUP WORK IN AN EFFORT TO CREATE AN ACTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AS OPPOSED TO A PASSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. TO BEGIN WARMING UP THE STUDENTS TO THE IDEA OF GROUP WORK, I STARTED OUT WITH A QUOTE FROM HENRY FORD I FELT WAS IMPACTFUL REGARDING WORKING WITH OTHERS. THE FORD QUOTE HELPED ME FRAME GROUPWORK IN A POSITIVE WAY.
THIS SLIDE PROVIDED INSIGHT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF GROUP WORK. THIS SLIDE WORKED WELL IN PROPMTPING A CONVERSATION AMONG THE STUDENTS ABOUT GROUP WORK, COMMUNITY, TRUST AND FORMING RELATIONSHIPS.
THIS SLIDE PROVIDED INFORMATION ABOUT DOLPHIN INTEREST GROUPS (DIGS) THE BI-WEEKLY SMALL GROUP MEETINGS. DIGS WERE MEANT TO HELP THE STUDENT GROW PERSONALLY, DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PEERS, AND GAIN A FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAMPUS CULTURE AND RESOURCES. IF STUDENTS COULD ABSOLUTELY NOT MAKE A DIG (WHICH WAS RARE) THEY USUALLY JUST ADJUSTED THEIR SCHEDULE A BIT TO JUMP INTO ANOTHER DIG GROUP. DIG GROUPS MADE FOR A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF THE STUDENTS GRADE
This slide was an overview of:
Group work: Students were also prompted to begin looking at when they wanted to schedule their DIGS
MyCI: My CI is the schools website for student e-mail, the library, personal portfolio, and many other interactive resources
Blackboard: Note at the time CSUCI was using Blackboard but has since switched to using Canva which is a web-based course management program that enables instructors to present course content and interact with their students
Academic Counseling: Went over the procedure to meet with academic counselors, checking in with a counselor every semester was highly recommended for students.
I would close my presentation with this quote from Tolstoy to close the class, but kick off the semester with changes students hoped for themselves, their goals, and the impact they wanted to make in the world.
