4.  In 1982 Willy Rozenbaum a clinician in paris asked montagnier
assistance
 In establishing the cause of mysterious new syndrome - AIDS
 AIDS ( known at that time “ gay related immune deficiency” or GRID
 Rozendaum had suggested at scientific meetings that the cause of the
disease might be a Retrovirus

5.  Montagnier and his team examined samples taken from Rozenbaum’s AIDS
patient
 They found a virus in a lymph node biopsy, later known as HIV .
 They named it “lymphadenopathy associated virus” or LAV.
 It was not clear that it was caused by AIDS

 American biomedical researcher
 Best known for the discovery of HIV (human immuno deficiency virus)
 HIV – infectious agent responsible for AIDS
 Major contributer to HIV research

8.  Gallo became interested in the study of Retrovirus,
 Examine the culture fluid of activated lymphocytes for the possible production of
growth factors .
 Soon there was a Successful in growing T lymphocytes
 Gallo and their group identified this as a T- cell growth factor (TCGF)
 Later TCGF name was changed to IL -2( interleukin-2)
 Researchers grow T – cells and the study the virus that affect them as human T- cell
leukemia virus or HTLV
 first human RNA virus
 Received lasker award for his discoveries : leukemias and lymphomas

9. DISCOVERY OF HIV
 By 1982 research was goining on ,in both the united states and france to
identify virus
 In the united states Robert Gallo called the virus as HTLV – III (human t
cell lymphotrophic virus type III )
 In france Luc montagier called the virus as LAV(lymph adenopathy
associated virus )
 Both the group of researchers were working on same virus
 In 1983 the disease was said to be caused by the (human immuno deficiency
virus )HIV
 It just replaced the name GRID ( gay related immuno deficiency)
 Credit for the discovery was given jointly to united states team and french
group.
