In this slide, the favorable environments of Hydrocarbon accumulation, Major occurrences, and detailed lecture has been done on where to look for Hydrocarbons is discussed.
2. Where to look for HC?
Oil search is like hunting game
For fishing you won’t go to the mountains
For hunting deer you wont go to sea
HC has its own habitat
Normally found in
• sedimentary rocks with pores where HC can stay
In areas where suitable conditions existed in geologic past (millions of years ago)
• for flourishing and depositing organic material
4. Where to look for HC?
It has a chance factor
Like hunting you have probabilities of finding HC
but no surety
If HC is found in one area, it is likely that nearby areas will have it too
6. Favorable Conditions
A calm, shallow, warm and stable sea, gulf like, in the geologic past
Much of the oil of the world comes from areas which are either presently gulfs OR which were
gulfs in the past
Examples: Arabian/Persian Gulf,Gulf of Mexico, Niger Gulf, CaspianSea
A supporting environment for the sea and near-shore life in that sea
7. Favorable Conditions
Slow and continuous deposition of sediments
Little tectonic activities
i.e. uplifting and crumbling of rocks
High temperature & enough overlying pressure
for maturity and migration
8. Unfavorable Conditions
Rocks deposited in rough, very deep, very cold sea
No HC is yet found in polar regions
Sediments deposited on land
Areas with igneous activities/metamorphic rocks
With some exceptions
Areas with intense tectonic activities; Himalayas, Alps, Andes, etc.
Areas with very fast sediment deposition
