3. Introduction
to Design
Objective
To sensitize and orient the students towards ‘design thinking’ &
‘design as profession’.
What we done
During this module we attained guest speakers talks and presentation.
Everyday it was something new for us as design is vast. We had a
different talks like design in engineering part, in product design. We had
seen 3 documentary on Gray Hustwit - Objectified, Helvetica, Urbannized.
My Understanding
Design is everywhere & it is a part of nature but the one word what I must
say that design is solution and designer have that responsibility to solve it
or make things user- friendly with his visualization after understanding
emotions of user & should experience the thing what he design or makes
things better then earlier.
Assignments
Based on our own understanding and the experience and insights
gathered from the course, students will reflect and articulate their thoughts
on ‘Design’, in both visual/write up formats.
4. Design is everywhere & it is a part of nature, So why don’t you save your nature with sustainable
design which reduces negative impact for nature where we want better life with designed things
surrounding us. So choose new way+ better vision than others & think for a while for environment
before designing bike or car or what can harm to your earth..oopss!! your life.
Assignment 1
Based on your own understanding and the experience/insights that you gathered
from the course (through the guest lectures, discussions, audio visuals), articulate
and represent your ‘thoughts on
Design’, visually, as a poster.
Assignment 2
Select any object /product/ manufactured artefact or system, which you associate with,
which you think is well designed or well made.

8. Fundamental of
Visual Design
Objective
To sensitize and orient students towards visual skills through observation,
experience, perception and representation.
My Understanding
According to me we can only design what we can draw. With the help of this module I
improved and refined my drawing skills. I know how colour interaction can change
the meaning & feel, how to draw isometric form for 3D. And composition is not limited
to paper.
Module 1: Drawing & Visualization
This module will cover various way of seeing, reading and recording in the form of
drawing to document the life around one. Motto is everybody can draw.
Contents:
Nature drawing
Human Figure
Perspective drawing
Analytical Drawing
Project: Visual Diary
9. Different types of lines what I was trying to do in proper manner, According to me this
ex. is must for your hand control during drawing for correct line or stroke. With
practice I got command on my hand movement.
Draw human figures with ‘charcoal’ and water prof ink both. It improve your
observation during drawing plus increase your confident on stroke.
10. Write up on ‘Secrete of drawing - Drawing by design by BBC’
11. Ex. helped me to understand
how stroke matters to show
depth & 3D look.
Freehand Isometrics - What I found is Isometric
drawing is a method of representing an object in 3D
with real dimensions.
Perspective drawing - We started
with basic cube ex, to understand
that how perspective works. I
learned about what is 1-2-3 point
perspective. We draw 1 & 2 live.
Ex. is about how people interact at one place, I have selected ‘Swaminarayan dham’
to understand place and activity. It was very peace full place. I communicated with
people to know more and it was grate experience.
12. Module 2: Colour & Form
Colour is one of the most complex yet fascinating phenomena of human beings. This
module will introduce nothing but appreciation of colour& form as physical,
pshychological and cultural context. Motto is to ban the word ‘Colour Blind’.
Contents:
Colour theory & anti theory
Colour interaction
Colours and light
Colour and meaning
Context and culture
Fundamental of
Visual Design
When I changed background and foreground colour I understood that how colour
value & intensity changed.
Ex. help me to know how to identify hue, tint, shade & tone. I visited ‘Bhadra Fort’.
We had to made texture and colour what I felt there and what I saw there which
increased sense to feel colours & the way to present it.
13. Colour weel-
This was a group work.
Which helped me to know the
technique of colour mixing.
Mood Board on ‘Bhadra Fort’ where we visited, It was like full experiment project to
got that feeling of this place threw this mood board. It helped me to explore the place
as much as I can.
14. Module 3 : Structure & Composition
Gestalt is a good thing to revisit in today’s maddening breathless life. We forget to
see and appreciate.
This module will introduce nothing but once again appreciation of life in every
moment. Individual ways of seeing and reading. Reading in a macro and micro way.
Motto is ‘Ways of Seeing’.
Contents:
Gestalt perception
Form and concept
Meaning making: Form, structure and context
Traditions in compositions
Fundamental of
Visual Design
I understood- How environment and elements can play a role to express ‘Bhyanak
rasa’. It was about skill the way you compose your subject in frame and clicked good
picture.
We learned 6 laws of Gestalt-
1. Proximity
2. Similarity
3. Figure and background
4. Continuity
5. Closure
6. Common Fate
We were divided in groups & I worked on Figure & background.
It was a group presentation with .ppt.
15. With use of any form & convey a narrative in abstract way. It's a invention what
makes you think.
Hand painted poster- I have selected
‘Sant Ras’. I used light tone for peace
feelings. Abstract form indicates water
waves for deep thinking.
It was a challenge to depict the feelings
of peace.
I was also clam during painting this
poster which is reflected here.
1)Compose a narrative in class with music. Use environment & compose an
abstract story using the principles and elements of visual design. We were aloud to
use music and any objects we want to.
17. Objective
The broad objectives of the course are:
-To provide students with theoretical tools of understanding art and culture.
-To give a brief survey of aesthetic theories and principles by which any
product is judged in a given epistemic field.
-To examine and explore the link between art, design and aesthetic.
-To engage the students to think in abstract terms, convert abstract
perceptions to concrete representations and
-To try and articulate (in speech and writing) their perception of aesthetic.
My understanding
I thought it was all gibberish but it was not, I learned aesthetics in
Indian and western tradition‘Aesthetics’ which is the study of beauty and
taste, whether in the form of the comic, the tragic, or the sublime. The word
comes from the Greek word a is the aisthetikos. We learned about realism
(Plato), ‘sublimity’.
Aesthetics is where we comment upon the appearance. As
designers you need you need to think and design about the aesthetics of a
product as generally people want products that look pleasing.
Aesthetic qualities may be sub-divided into a number of basic
elements…Unity, Proportion, Scale, Balance, Symmetry, Rhythm and also
Vision, Hearing, Touch, Taste, Smell. I learn about basics of Natyasastra
,bhava and nav rasa.

19. Materials & Processes
(Digital Photography)
We experienced full frame camera. We done ex. about focal length, metering
modes, Shutter speed, Aperture, rules. We covered some photoshop skills & printing
method, learned the way how negative scanner work.
Morning bus for ‘sabarmati’ riverfront Ahmedabad
At Malhar’s studio we know the technique to expose a negative on glass in
dark room.
20. We exhibited our class work ‘narrative’ photography’ in NID campus near
Auditorium. Mr. Wolfgang Zurborn also guided us to established photography
skills.
Having seen my self in ‘NODE’
video this module became more
memorable for me.
My narration was about ‘MF- Monsoon Feasta after Khopcha’. It was about night
life of NID. NID is is not just place it is more like an organism.
22. Design
Process
Objective
Course is about research on product or activity in our regular life and find
problems and solve it. Moto is not to design or reach to final design but it was
more emphasized on process of research before design anything.
My Understanding
It helped me to know about the process to design anything. It was my favorite
course due to I done what I never notice in my usual life style. It was a group
project and I was working on ‘hair braiding’ process. We has done full research
as much as u could.
We started with our self to observe the process of ‘hair braiding’. We made a list
of questioner for our target audience to know what problems they are facing and
the way they are braid their hair.
23. We covered school, village & society, collage & parlor. The questions what we need
to know about braiding were- how many time, by own self or, where, wash, duration,
night condition, oiled or dry, which comb, what is after braided, is there any other
I was also handling drawing part to show a process, beginning to the end.
In the end I come up with 3 solutions of one problem which was - ‘ handling of extra
hair after hair braiding’.

25. Fundamental
of Light
Objective
To learn about studio/artificial lights. Moto is the understanding the role of the light in
Photography.
My Understanding - As below
How natural sun light & shadow can create different geometric forms.
During night how artificial light creates patterns.
Setup any element & create a nice composition with shadow & natural light.
26. Ex. is about explore shutter speed - We clicked panning shot, in other one which is
opposite where sub. is moving.
Clicked portraits, full figure, semi nude shots with the help of modeling lights -
soft/hard lights & know about curves.
Having learned the use of modeling light in studio, we were doing same ex. in out
door with black cloth background to judge how light is playing with face features. We
took 8 shots with different sides during morning sun light.
27. Clicked object with different angles and create inerrestign shadows and forms.
During experimented with slow shutter speed we were doing light paintings.
We were aloud to set up our own concepts. I done with slow shutter speed with the
help of my friend to write this alphabets. I used LED lights and phone flash light. I
was surprised after experienced this and understood the unlimited exploration what
we can do with this technique.
28. Special Thanks to Shrijit & Disha
Set objects surrounding you, judge shadow & make interesting concepts. We were
aloud to draw sketches in background.
Window portraits in natural lights to know how light plays with facial features &
clicked the proper portraits with correct exposure.
30. Research
Workshop-1
Objective
To understand the process to document someone’s life. Moto is to be open
as a photographer. This part of the Research Workshop is designed to sensitise you
to the importance of research in visual arts & communication, and help you include
research as an integral tool in any photography project.
My Understanding
For me this course was must to earn a respect for those photographer who
just clicked portraits or still life photography. Having done this I understood the
research and the hard work what photographers used to do behind any
documentation or biography.
We Done
One first day we had to send a link about Social and power relationships -
articles. We were working on the redistribution of income and service dependencies
related to middle classes in India. We started with keywords, we arranged it and
made questioner after discussions. We discussed about what to ask and how to ask.
My Experience
I was very surprised with people’s different life styles and their need. I found
my self more attached due to I was aware with their language. I spend 2 hours to
find one maid during this workshop. I was asking door to door and knowing every
new personality with new answers. Having find his family it was a unbelievable
movement.
As we were working on redistribution of income and service dependencies related to
middle class, after all discussions we started shot with Tiwari in our campus. We
interviewed him and we found more three major security guard under him, thus we
found barber and tailor under those and it was not going to stop.
31. This course’s first week we were in Delhi for DPF - Delhi Photo Festival.
It was new city, new place, new morning, that 7 days with artist talks,
lectures, seminars, parties plus more then 40 exhibitions and more then 40
photographers around me, it was all magnificent. With full excitement & enthusiasm,
we entered in brand new IGNCA, New Delhi. Delhi Photo Festival(2015) was all
about photography lovers, it is labor of love. This festival was like right people are
meeting on right place. It is all about education, support and love for photography. It
is a pleasure or most lucky movement to attained this festival as a photography
student
Assignment | Photographer in DPF 2015
ANGÉLICA DASS! She was the photographer in Delhi Photo Festival 2015
for whom I felt wow!! for her work! It was something different & something creative!
I really fond of her work 'Humanae' work in progress, which is an infinite and
unfinished. If we differentiate, ANGELICA's work from others, it is very positive and
impactful. Because in this 'Humanae' work is “the others” who are telling her history,
that finally are their own stories. There are so many people who came forward to be
a part of her project so there is some emotional bridge which motivates more than
2700 unknown people to participate in a project like this. I have chosen her because
her work is attached with people emotions, how people are connected with each
other instead of their different skin tone.
