2. Definition
passive voice refers to a type
of sentence or clause in
which the subject receives the
action of the verb.

3. In the passive :
 THE OBJECT of an active verb becomes THE
SUBJECT of the passive verb.
 Notice that the subject of an active verb follows BY in a
passive sentence.
 The noun that follows by is called “AGENT”.
 Form of passive : BE + PAST PARTICIPLE.
For Example:
Marry helped the boy. (Active)
The boy was helped by Mary.(Passive)

5. Tense forms of the passive.
 Simple Present
Mary helps the boy  The boy is helped by Mary.
 Present Progressive
Mary is helping the boy The boy is being helped by Mary.
 Present Perfect*
Mary has helped the boy  The boy has been helped by Mary.

6. Tense forms of the passive.
 Simple Past
Mary helped the boy  The boy was helped by Mary.
 Past Progressive
Mary was helping the boy  The boy was being helped by Mary.
 Past Perfect*
Mary had helped the boy  The boy had been helped by Mary.

7. Tense forms of the passive.
 Simple Future
Mary will help the boy  The boy will be helped by Mary
 Be going to
Mary is going to help the boy  The boy is going to be helped by Mary.
 Future Perfect*
Marry will have helped the boy  The boy will have been helped by
Mary.

8. The passive form of modals and phrasal modals
Passive form : modal* + be + past participle
1) Tom will be invited to the picnic.
2) The door can’t be opened.
3) Children should be taught to respect their elders.

9. The passive form of modals and phrasal modals
Past passive form : modal + have been + past participle
1) The letter should have been sent last week.
2) This house must have been built over 200 years ago.
3) Eric could not have been offered the job.
