The Vietnam War lasted from 1954 to 1975 between North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the USSR, China, and North Korea, while South Vietnam was supported by the US and its allies. Before World War 2, Vietnam was a French colony, and after the war the Vietnamese army opposed French control. The US backed South Vietnam's anti-communist government and sent advisors, leading to escalating conflict between North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces and the US. Over time the US increased troop involvement but also began withdrawing, and by 1973 most US troops had left as North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam, ending the war.
