India- Indonesia Co-Ordinated Patrol Commences
The 29th India–Indonesia CORPAT has commenced at
Port Blair under the aegis of Andaman and Nicobar
Command. The bilateral exercise is scheduled to be held
from 9th to 25th May. The Indonesian Naval Ship KRI
Sutedi Senoputra has arrived to take part in the 29th series
of IND–INDO CORPAT. An Indonesian Maritime Patrol
Aircraft has also arrived with the Indonesian Naval delegation. Defence relations between India
and Indonesia are growing steadily with regular joint activities and interactions between the
Armed Forces of the two countries. The bilateral exercise aims to enhance mutual
understanding and inter–operability between the two navies. It also reflects the shared concerns
between the two navies for a peaceful Indian Ocean for the benefit of international community.
CORPAT: CORPAT is a bilateral maritime exercise held between India and Indonesia under
thebroad ambit of strategic partnership. Both countries have been carrying out maritime
exercise twice a year since 2002. The CORPAT exercise between the two navies carries search
and rescue operations, institutes measures for vessels indulged in unlawful activities as well as
control pollution. The main aim of CORPAT is to keep the vital part of the Indian Ocean Region
(IOR) safe and secure for commercial shipping, International trade and legitimate marine
activities. The CORPAT has helped to strengthened understanding and interoperability
between the two navies and also has promoted net maritime security in the region.

India & Japan to Strengthen Defence Cooperation
India and Japan has decided to strengthen their military
cooperation and hopes to pursue a strategic partnership
for ensuring regional peace and stability. The visit of
Defence minister Arun Jaitley to Tokyo comes at the
backdrop of rising tension in the region such as
territorial rows over the South China Sea and nuclear and missile threats from North Korea. The
purpose of visit of Arun Jaitley to Tokyo was to attend an annual meeting of the Asian
Development Bank. India and Japan have been increasing their defence cooperation amid
China’s increasing assertiveness in the region. India has welcomed the conduct of a planned
trilateral naval exercise among the US, India and Japan in July as a means to strengthen
cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. The Malabar trilateral exercise between Japan, the U.S. and
India are slated to be held in the Bay of Bengal from July 10. Japan would send its helicopter
carrier Izumo which is its largest warship to take part in the exercise. The Malabar series of
exercise was initiated by the U.S. and India in 1992. Japan joined the exercise in 2007. However,
only since 2014, Japan has started to take part in every year’s exercise. Recently, it was agreed
that Japan will become a regular Malabar member.
Supreme Court Sentences Justice Karnan to 6 Months Imprisonment
A seven-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court
headed by Chief Justice J S Khehar has sentenced the
Calcutta High Court judge, Justice C S Karnan to six
months of imprisonment for repeated incidents of
contempt of court. This is the first time that the Supreme

Court has sent a high court judge to jail on charges of contempt. Further, the bench also
comprising Justices Dipak Misra, J Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, M B Lokur, P C Ghose and
Kurian Joseph has prohibited media, both print and electronic from publishing any further
orders if any passed by Justice Karnan. The Ministry of Home Affairs has asked all the state
governments to link prisons with courts through video conferencing in order to expedite trials
and to save costs of escorting undertrials to courts. The Home Ministry’s advisory to the states
has been issued following a national conference of heads of prisons in states and UTs on prison
reforms.
Salient Highlights: In the conference, the state governments were advised to implement the
following suggestions aimed at having an effective prison administration system:
The states have been asked to integrate prison e-system with Crime and Criminal Tracking
Network and Systems (CCTNS) as well as e-courts on a priority basis. At periodic intervals,
combined training of prison, police, health department and judiciary on undertrial management
should be conducted. Separate training module on deradicalisation of prisoners should also be
conducted.
Supreme Court to become paperless, digital court from today
The Supreme Court will take its first step towards becoming a
paperless, digital court today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
will inaugurate the digital filing system at a function in New
Delhi where the Integrated Case Management System will be
connected with the Supreme Court website. The event will also
be attended by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and judges of the apex court.

Maharashtra Cabinet approves State GST Bill
Maharashtra Cabinet approved the State Goods and Services
Tax (SGST) draft bill, having provision to provide financial
security to local bodies in state and protecting their
autonomy. The decision was taken in the weekly cabinet
meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in
Mumbai. According to a release from the CM's office, the sugarcane purchase tax, Central Sales
tax, entry tax on vehicles, entry tax on goods, lottery tax, forest produce tax, betting tax, octroi
and local bodies tax will be scrapped, after the State GST comes into force. The local bodies will
be provided with compensation
India and the Netherlands agree to fight terrorism together
India and the Netherlands have resolved to work
bilaterally and globally to fight terrorism in all its forms
and manifestations. External Affairs Minister Sushma
Swaraj met her Dutch counterpart Bert Koenders in New
Delhi on the 9th May 2017 and discussed a wide range of
issues. Mrs Swaraj sought the Netherlands' support for
early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United
Nations. She also thanked the Dutch Foreign Minister for their support to India's accession to
the various multilateral export control regimes as well as for its bid to get the membership of
the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

Indian American Nominated for Key Post in FERC
US President Donald Trump has nominated Indian-American Neil
Chatterjee as a Member of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
(FERC). FERC is an agency responsible for overseeing America’s
power grid and deciding on multibillion-dollar energy projects. His
term will expire on June 30, 2021. US Senate has to confirm
Chatterjee before he can be sworn in as member of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
International Court of Justice stays Kulbhushan Jadhav's hanging
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has stayed the
execution of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav who was
sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court for alleged
spying. The Hague-based ICJ said, Pakistan must take all
necessary measures to ensure that Jadhav is not executed. It
also directed Pakistan to inform it about the action taken. The official order by ICJ comes a day
after India approached the court against the death sentence given to the former Naval officer.
India, in its appeal, had said Pakistan was denying consular access to Jadhav, despite repeated
requests, which is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

South Korea elects Moon Jae-In of Democratic Party as country's new President
Moon Jae-In of the Democratic Party has won South
Korea's Presidential elections. The National Election
Commission said, Moon, a former human rights
lawyer, bagged around 41 percent votes in the
elections held on the 9th May 2017. The ballot was
needed after former President Park Geun-Hye was ousted and indicted for corruption. The
voting also took place against the backdrop of high tensions with the nuclear-armed North.
Jhulan Goswami named Highest Wicket-Taker in Women’s One-Day
Internationals
Jhulan Goswami has become the highest wicket-taker in one-day internationals. Goswami has
so far taken 181 wickets in 153 matches. She has broken
the world record held by Australia fast bowler Cathryn
Fitzpatrick who has taken 180 wickets during India’s
ongoing match against South Africa in the Women’s
Quadrangular Series in Potchefstroom. She achieved this
feat with the wicket of No.11 batsman Raisibe Ntozakhe of South Africa.
