2. What is a paired

• The paired tutorial is an interactive
conversation between 2 people
• The tutorial will last for 20 minutes.
• You will work with a partner
• You will have an appointment time for
you and your partner
• The purpose of the tutorial is to improve
your confidence and ability in speaking

3. Useful Language
In my country……
Can you tell me about the situation in your country?
Is it the same in your country?
How about in your country?
That’s interesting
It is different/the same in my country
Actually, in our (education system) ….
4. Before the tutorial
You will prepare ideas on a selected topic
However, we do not want you to read/memorize long
sections from a script or book. Remember, you are
going to have a conversation with your partner
5. During the tutorial
You must interact with your partner during the tutorial –
so you:
• present ideas
• listen to your partner
• check ideas
• ask questions
• agree/disagree etc.
6. Reflection after the tutorial
The tutorial is recorded so that you can listen to it after and reflect on
your performance. This means you should think about:
• did I speak clearly?
• was my pronunciation good?
• was I fluent?
• did I prepare well – did I have ideas that were interesting?
• did I listen to my partner and respond appropriately?
7. Self-study preparation for the paired tutorial
• Make sure that you’ve read Making Connections Unit 1, Reading 5- ‘How
Information Got Smart’ on MyAberdeen page 1.6
• Read the critical thinking activity on p.72 (at the end of Reading 5)
• Complete Activity 1D on page 1.7 on MyAberdeen- this discussion allows
you to plan and share your ideas to practice before the paired tutorial.
• In your paired tutorial you should choose one of the claims on p.72 to
discuss with a partner, using evidence from the reading and your own ideas
to support your opinion.
