3. Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21,
1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American
journalist, novelist, short-story
writer, and sportsman. His
economical and understated style—
which he termed the iceberg theory
—had a strong influence on 20th-
century fiction, while his adventurous
lifestyle and his public image brought
him admiration from later
generations. Hemingway produced
most of his work between the mid-
1920s and the mid-1950s, and he won
the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
He published seven novels, six short-
story collections, and two nonfiction
works. Three of his novels, four
short-story collections, and three
nonfiction works were published
posthumously. Many of his works are
considered classics of American
literature.
5. Old Man and The Sea
The old man and the sea is a simple but an interesting
story of courage , pride , struggle and persistence .the
story revolves around the major character that is
Santiago an old fisherman , who is now the laughing
stock among the village people because he was not
able to catch a single fish during 84 days. Once he
was considered as the most celebrated fisherman and
now because of bad luck he is called as “SALAO”
6. Santiago hooks the marlin, which we
learn at the end of the novella measures
eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his
fishing expedition. Because of the
marlin’s great size, Santiago is unable to
pull the fish in, and the two become
engaged in a kind of tug-of-war that
often seems more like an alliance than a
struggle. The fishing line serves as a
symbol of the fraternal connection
Santiago feels with the fish. When the
captured marlin is later destroyed by
sharks, Santiago feels destroyed as well.
Like Santiago, the marlin is implicitly
compared to Christ.
