3. Preparation Outline…
 A preparation outline is a
detailed outline developed during the process
of speech preparation. The function of
a preparation outline is to firm up your thesis
statement, establish and organize your main
points, and develop your supporting material.
It should be revisited and revised throughout
speech preparation.

4. To make a correct outline, follow
these instructions…
 Use standard outline numbering:
Outline numbering follows this sequence..
I. First main point
A. First sub point of I
1. First sub point of B
2. Second sub point of B
a. First supporting material of 2
b. Second supporting material of 2

5.  Write preparation outline in
complete sentences…
 Like those as you will use when delivering
your speech.
 Unless you write complex sentences, you will
have trouble judging the coherence of
speech.

6.  Use at least two sub divisions..
 If you have more than 5 to 6 sub points, you
can place several of them under another main
point. As a result the audience will remember
your ideas more easily if they are divided into
blocks of three or four.

7.  Indent points, sub points and
supporting material properly…
 The main points indicated by roman numerals
are written closest to the left margin

8. Developing a Delivery outline…
A delivery outline, as the name implies, is meant
to give you all you will need to present your
speech in the way you have planned and
rehearsed.
 However, it should not be so detailed that it
encourages you to read it rather than speak to
your audience.

9. Continued…
 As you rehearse your speech, you will find
that you need your original outline or text less
and less.
 Both the structure and content of your speech
will become set in your mind. At this point, you
are ready to prepare a delivery outline.

11. Types of speech outlines…
 Preparation outline
Allows speaker to examine speech for
completeness, unity, coherence, and overall
effectiveness. Serves as first rehearsal outline.

 Delivery outline
 Can serves as speaking notes.
 Once you have finished organizing the
content of your speech, you need to be ready
for delivery. This is what delivery outline does
to help you.

 There are many methods of delivery. You can
either chose to be impromptu, not prepared at
all, or you can memorize the stuff.
 It all depends on the ambience and the
audience that you are going to face. If the
audience is friendly, you can deliver the
speech in a friendly, relaxed manner.

14. Speaking notes…
 Many speakers find paper difficult to handle, so
they transfer their delivery outlines to note cards.
 Note cards are small enough to hold in one hand
if necessary, n stiff enough not to rustle.
 You may find it helpful to plan your note cards
according to logical blocks of material, using one
note card for intro, one or two for the body and for
the conclusion.

 At any rate plan, so that you don’t have to
shuffle note cards midsentence.
 Number the note cards to prevent the
confusion between order.
