How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary tasks taylor
1. How effective is the combination
of your main and ancillary tasks
2. Introduction
• In my A2 media studies coursework, my group
and I were required to make a short trailer,
along with an ancillary task of making a
original film poster and a featured magazine.
Slasher/Thriller is the genre for the film. This
presentation will show the effectiveness of the
combination of the two products with the
trailer.
3. The purpose for an ancillary task
• Each of the products aims to advertise and
promote one another.
• The poster and magazine works to gain
recognition for my trailer. In order to create
recognition the brand I used is ‘The Enigma’ with
a ‘horror’ type font.
• As a recurring word along with the same colour
scheme.
4. Software used
• Poster: For the poster I
used Photoshop to
manipulate the original
image. I was able to
change the lighting to a
more darker tone to fit
with its dark and
gloomy image.
• Magazine: I used In
design. I was able to
create a conventional-
looking magazine. I also
used Microsoft
PowerPoint to create a
sticker for the
magazine.
5. The products
The poster
The magazine
A still from the trailer
Piggy is used in all
three products to
signify that he is the
main character and
establishes that it’s
a horror trailer. The setting in the
poster shows the
weather to be dark
and gloomy
reflecting the
weather in the trailer
The title is at bottom
of the page which is
not ideal, but it is the
biggest font of the
poster to catch the
audience attention
The slogan,
designed to be
short and catchy.
6. Main product: Trailer
• Setting
• Set in a secluded park/woods,
away from civilization. We chose
the woods because they are dark,
creepy, and hard to navigate.
Woods are conventionally used in
some horrors like dead end and
cabin fever.
7. Style
• Colour change
• Pathetic fallacy: As the mood changes so does
the lighting. At the beginning, the mood of the
teens are happy and positive, so there’s high
key lighting. When the trailer goes to low key
lighting so does the mood, turning to fear and
panic.
• The iconography of the piggy mask shows a
homicidal maniac on the loose. The
iconography of the piggy mask shows a
recognizable antagonist that is identifiable.
Piggy is the main character. He appears in all
three of my products.
8. The purpose of the mask
Masks are like staples in some horror films,
for example scream and Friday the 13th all
villains use mask as part of their costume.
Sometimes they serve to hide the killer’s
identity, while other times they conceal a
disfigured face, Usually, the idea is that it’s
what lurks underneath the mask that’s scary,
but a good horror movie mask is frightening
in its own right.
9. Ancillary task: magazine
I have researched other magazine covers
to try and make my magazine look
conventional but not too similar. I looked
at magazines at the Empire website. I
noticed how the magazines which
featured films on the cover always has
the film title in a large font and the main
character as a big image on the front
cover. Along with other films being
mentioned on the cover.
10. Ancillary task: Poster
The chosen typography can be easily
recognized as it is used on the magazine and
the trailer. Below is a poster that has
influenced my product. It is from a film called
Fright Night. We are influenced by the fact
that It captures a gloomy dark atmosphere
with a scary figure from above. Almost godly-
like however its not a holy person by a person
of fear. We tried to produce similar results to
Piggy. Who symbolizes fear and power. The
idea that he is omnipresent, omnipotent and
omniscient.
