Observation of Tangible Urban Elements:
TANGIBLE URBAN ELEMENTS: PRESENT/ ABSENT OBSERVATIONS
STREETS Present Not all but few streets can be observed in the
drawing. The main road is shown in a very
detailed manner by including the street lights
and divider.
BUILDING/ LANDMARKS Present Few buildings and land marks can be
observed, however more buildings are shown
in the place near by the child’s new house.
It has been observed that mostly those places
or buildings which are more familiar to the
child along with the newly constructed things
has been drawn by the child.
BENCHES Absent There are no benches present at the place.
LIGHTING FIXTURES Absent Only street lights can be observed in the
drawing.
CARS/ VEHICLES Absent There is no vehicles drawn by the child.
TREES/ BUSHES Present Few trees were drawn by the child. Mostly
those trees were drawn which are nearby
some landmarks or building.
PEOPLE Absent There are no people drawn by the child.
PARKING Absent There is not any dedicated parking area in the
city however people do park their cars on the
roadside but that was not drawn by the child
in the drawing.
PARKS/ OPEN SPACES Present These kind of places are more familiar to the
child therefore these type of areas can be
seen in the drawing.
BUILDING SIGNAGES Absent Building signage cannot be seen in the
drawing.
NATURE (SKY, SUN, BIRD, FLOWER,
ETC)
Absent These too cannot be seen in the drawing.
Observation of Intangible Urban Elements:-
Intangible Urban Elements Present/ Absent Observations
Destination Choice Absent There is only one route drawn by the kid so
there is no other choice available other
than that.
Journey length Absent The journey length is not shown by the child
however in reality the journey length is 350
meters.
Scale of the buildings Present Most of the buildings which have been
drawn by the child are in the scale and
proportionate to the width of the road.
Links of the trip/ journey Absent
Urban design qualities Present Urban design qualities can be seen in the
drawing as in the drawing the sidewalk,
trees and the road divider along with the
street lights.
Enclosure Absent
Length of the trip Absent
No. of turns Absent As the road is straight in reality and the child
has also drawn it straight therefore there
are no turns.
Road profile Present The child has coloured the black tar road
which is the main road in dark colour and
the cc road which is the minor road is
shown with light colour.
Form of buildings Present Various forms of the building can be seen in
the drawing.
Order of structures Absent
Ratio of human to building Absent As there are no human figure drawn by the
child therefore ratio of human to building
cannot be determined.
Colors of the urban environment Present Child has coloured various things in the
drawing like trees , divider, streets etc.
Places of interest Present It has been observed that mostly those places or
buildings which are more familiar to the child
along with the newly constructed things has
been drawn by the child.
Time of the day Absent
Indian Culture Present Two temples can be seen in the drawing
which shows the Indian culture.
Window building proportion Present Window building proportion can be seen in
the drawing.
Analysis:-
What went right and why?
All the buildings and the landmarks which are drawn by the child are in the right sequence and most of the
trees which were placed in the drawing are there in the reality too. Also most of the buildings drawn are in
proportion too. These things went right because as it has been observed that mostly those places or buildings
which are more familiar to the child along with the newly constructed things has been drawn by the child. And also
child is living in the city from his birth (12yrs) and the route is also very much familiar to him that’s why I think the above
things went right.
What went wrong and why?
There are various things that are incorrect in the drawing like the distance between all of the buildings are
not correct also the child has missed various other elements like other buildings, cars , people etc. also the
trees which are drawn by the child are not proportional to the buildings . These all above things went
wrong because as a normal child he don’t know studied how to make maps and his age is very less. And
also mostly children gets attracted to those places which are either familiar to them or if the place is very
aesthetic to them. Therefore these are the reasons for why the above things went wrong.
