2. Leadership
The Kalinago leader was elected by the elders and
earned his position by proving himself as an
outstanding warrior.
He kept the people together in times of peace and
hostility,
Some of his functions were preparing his men for
military campaigns, leading raiding expeditions and
determining war strategies.
The Kalinagos had hereditary chiefs,nobles and
priests.
Each clan also elected a commander,naharlene, of
the canoes as well as captain,tibutuli canaoa,of
each crew.
3. Building structures
(i)Karbet/Carbay/Karbay
This was the biggest house or central
building and was rectangular in shape.This
building was where the men gathered to
hold discussions about
fishing,trading,warfare and organizing the
settlement.Boys ages from 4 and up lived
here.
(ii)Ordinary Structures
The house comprised one room where the
family slept.The Kalinago had simple
furniture such as hammocks and stools.
4. Religious Activities
The Kalinago worshiped Maboya, the evil spirit and many other sea
spirits.They believed that the world was divided into good and evil spirits that
fought each other for supremacy and that the individual mind was the
battlefield of this
Carving zemis had a special place in the homes of the Kalinago and were
greatly respected.
Creating magic charms-the Kalinagos believed that creating magic charms
would ward off evil spirits.
They smoked tobacco because they believed it
was a way to communicate with the gods.
