Course Description
 This course is designed for students and prospective teachers
to acquire a deeper perspective of the importance of
remedial instruction in education as a necessary tool for
learning the different macro skills in literacy and numeracy
and so with other subject areas.
 Particularly it is intended to familiarize student with the
different reading difficulties met by learners and to be able
to help the learners with reading disabilities to acquire skills
and improve their reading abilities through a functional
management of the program of reading remediation and
correction.

Remedial Instruction in Education
 also known as developmental education
 basic skills education
 competency education
Remedial Instruction in Education

 academic upgrading
 designed to assist students in order to achieve
expected competencies in literacy and numeracy
Objectives of Remedial Instruction
 to give additional help to learners who for one
reason or another, have fallen behind the rest
of the class from their respective
subjects/classes
Learners with learning difficulties
 poor memory
 short attention span and are easily distracted by other things
 relatively poor comprehensive power
 lack of learning motivation
 lack of self-confidence and relatively low self-expectation
 weak in problem-solving power
 fail to grasp information effectively and mix things up easily
 have difficulty in understanding new/abstract concepts
 fail to transfer knowledge to the related learning areas appropriately
 need more time to complete assignments or tasks

 to provide learning support to learners who lag
far behind their counterparts in school
performance

 to provide systematic training to develop
learners’ generic skills from interpersonal
relationship, communication, problem-solving,
self-management, self-learning, independent
thinking, creativity and use of information

Remedial Instruction in Education

  • 2. Course Description  This course is designed for students and prospective teachers to acquire a deeper perspective of the importance of remedial instruction in education as a necessary tool for learning the different macro skills in literacy and numeracy and so with other subject areas.  Particularly it is intended to familiarize student with the different reading difficulties met by learners and to be able to help the learners with reading disabilities to acquire skills and improve their reading abilities through a functional management of the program of reading remediation and correction.
  • 7. Requirements and Grading System *The Class will utilize Synchronous and Asynchronous mode of teaching-learning process  Quizzes/Activities/Projects----------------------20%  Attendance and Class Participation-------------20%  Reporting and Reflection Paper------------------30%  Exams (Prelim, Midterms, Finals)----------------30% Total 100%

  • 13. Objectives of Remedial Instruction  to give additional help to learners who for one reason or another, have fallen behind the rest of the class from their respective subjects/classes

Learners with learning difficulties  poor memory  short attention span and are easily distracted by other things  relatively poor comprehensive power  lack of learning motivation  lack of self-confidence and relatively low self-expectation  weak in problem-solving power  fail to grasp information effectively and mix things up easily  have difficulty in understanding new/abstract concepts  fail to transfer knowledge to the related learning areas appropriately  need more time to complete assignments or tasks
