2. When to start post abortion contraceptive
• Post abortion contraceptive need to be started immediately because
ovulation may occur as early as 11 days following treatment of
incomplete abortion and usually occurs before the first menstrual
bleeding.
• All women receiving post abortion care need counselling and
information to ensure they understand:
• They can become pregnant before the next means.
• There are safe contraceptive method to prevent or delay pregnancy.
• Where and how can they obtain FP services.
• All modern method of contraception are appropriate for use after
incomplete abortion.

3. Various contraception method
Method Timing
COCs & POCs Started COC, implant injection immediately
IUDs • IUDs can be inserted immediately.
• Delay for 4 weeks unless equipment and expertise are
available.
• Be sure there is no uterine infection and delay insertion
until cleared.
• If Hb <7 g/dl, delay until improves.
Barriers Method Start as soon as intercourse is resumed.
Natural Fp It is not recommended for immediate post abortion use.
Voluntary tubal ligation Immediately after abortion if there is no infection or severe
blood loss is present, delay until resolved
Vasectomy Performed at any time, timing is not related to abortion.
