3. INTRODUCTION
 On 15 June 1908 Eric and J. Wittmann chemist at the
university of Freiburg published a paper announcing
the synthesis of dapsone.
 In 1937 G.A.H Buttle one of the leading British
researchers conduct the first trial of DDS in guinea
pigs.
 In 1873 the Norwegian scientist Hansen identified the
pathogen mycobacterium leprae as the causative agent of
leprosy or Hansen disease.

4.  The use of dapsone in leprosy began in 1945 it is on the list of who
essential medicines the safest and most effective medicine needed
in health system.
 At time of Vietnam conflict Dapsone had been used for many
years in treatment of Leprosy.
 Later WHO discovered dapsone is a medicine that commonly
used in combination with other drug as Multiple Drug Therapy.

7.  Mild hemolytic anemia
 Headache, drug fever and mental symptom.
SIDE EFFECTS
 Allergic rashes
 Nausea
 Anorexia

8. RECENT DEVELOPEMENT
 The need for a more reliable route of administration lead to
investigation possibility of an I.M. dapsone depot injection.
 In early 2000s QLT USA develop Aczone a 5% dapsone gel that
was shown effective against acne without causing decline in hb
level even in G6PD deficiency people.
 In February 2016 FDA approved 7.5% dapsone gel.

9. DRUGS BRAND
 Aczone gel – 30gm
 Dapsone– 25mg, 50mg 100mg tablets

10. USES
 Mycobacterium leprae infections-100mg
orally once a day for 6 months.
 Dermatitis herpetiformis -50mg once a day
continued on a life long basis
 Pneumocystis pneumonia - 100mg once a day
14 to 21 days
 Acne – Aczone used.
 Prophylaxis -100mg orally twice a week
