It determines margin of safety of drug.
It is a ratio of Lethal dose to Effective dose.
Therapeutic Index(TI)=LD 50/ED 50
Where,
LD 50=Maximum dose of drug which is lethal or toxic to 50% of population.
ED 50=Minimum dose of drug which is effective to 50% of population.
