• Reptiles were first creeping animals to live on land. Terrestrial
animals
• Four limbs are present. They are pentadactyl. Have toes with
claws .
• Cold-blooded (ectothermic) They can not control their own body
temperature.
• Exoskeleton of horny scales, scutes or bony plates, keep moisture
inside.
• Body of reptiles is covered by dry, bony scutes. Glands are absent
in the skin of reptiles . non-glandular

• All turtles do not have teeth,instead they have a
beak and strong biting jaws
• Lungs with a large surface area
• In reptiles Heart is divided into 2 auricles, and
ventricle is divided into 2 chambers incompletely
formed. except crocodiles whose have 4 chambers.

• Sense organ of reptiles are tampanum (ear drum)
• Jacoboson organ is sensitive to odors (smell from environment)
• Metanephric kidneys present. Each kidney is provided with
separate ureter.
• Cranial nerves 12 pairs (except snakes which have 10 pairs)
• In reptiles No larval stages
• Fertilization internal. Eggs are laid on land.

• In reptiles Extra embryonic membranes are present
during the development of the embryo. Amniotes
(all 4 extra-embryonic membranes present) Amnion,
Chorion, Allantois, and youlk sac.
• Ecdysis or moulting(shedding of old skin) is common in
reptiles
